Basically if you mishit a pen to one side, as long as it is on target you have scored if the keeper goes the wrong way.

Panenka it and mishit and as seen today the keeper can readjust and save it.

Congrats to Mane for being the only one on that team who didn't join in the shenanigans but the rest are a disgrace

You could see him annoyed at his own teammates and urging them to return to the pitch. Even went down to the changing room to drag them back.

Mendy went to go down amd had time to reorganise and adjust to save because of the poor power ..

It was cocky hence why its universally agreed his miss made him look a tit

Yeah I get the cockiness part of it - it takes a lot of balls to not just hammer it. I just think it gets a harsh rep. I don’t know if they’re inherently easier to save - a keeper would know, I guess.

Devil's advocate:

If they hadn't had all that shenanigans would they have missed the penalty? Got to mess with your head all that going on. Would he have hit the panenka if they hadn't gone off the pitch?

How many other ways of penalty taking allow the goalkeeper time to get up and change position to make a save?

Yeah if you go down the middle and hit it hard the keeper can't readjust

Be interested to know if any Senegal players had been booked before the drama. Second yellow and the missed penalty still means they are playing entire of extra time with 10 men

There are plenty of penalties that are saveable despite being aimed in a different direction from the way the keeper initially dived.

But not for the keeper to readjust. They can basically save it at the second attempt.

According to this, the Panenka success rate is about 5% lower than other approaches
