I can't but help but feel our best 2 coaches Rioch & Carsley should be with the first team rather than the youth. I Reckon Rioch knows more about coaching than anyone at the club and could do a great job given a chance with the first team.

it's a different kettle of fish coaching and managing a first team compared to the academy. The academy are under less scrutany to perform as they play in front of a handful of people rather than 13000. I'm not saying either Rioch or Carsley couldn't do the job well by the way, just that the role of first team manager and that of academy manager are two completely different jobs

would play the academy boys in the first team cant be worse

That would possibly be the worst idea ever. The academy is about teaching boys how to play football. It's great that the u18s are doing fantastic at the moment but at the end of the day the performances are more important than the results at this level.

First team is about results as well as performances and the youngsters could be destroyed by that pressure. I think AT is doing a great job in trying to introduce some of them to the first team but also protecting them and not relying on individuals too much, even with our tiny squad!

What are you basing that on?

The fact that Thorn has never managed or coached before yet by all accounts Rioch is one of the best people at academy level in the country. If you ask me thats whats wrong with football in this country..........people who do the hard work and learn their job of coaching/managing tend to get overlooked and players who have just stopped playing often walk straight into management.

Management is completely different to playing.

But saying that rioch has much more job security than thorn - with the except of one or two managers you rarely get longer than a season at a club these days, nowhere near enough to build a team, which takes time. Also perhaps rioch actually enjoys 'teaching' young people how to play football? Perhaps he isn't interested in first team management?
