You can fluke your way to a cup win, you can’t fluke your way to the league trophy in a 46 game season. Some will say ‘shit league this year’ but fuck em, it’s only the superflu that put the title in doubt. There was a time when I thought I'd never see us in the top flight again.
But about 5 or 6 years after Robins return, in around 21/22, I knew I would. What a job he did rebuilding our club.
I must admit I thought we'd eventually go up via the play offs.
To do it through the autos, in all liklihood winning the league, besting the play off clubs, without busting the bank, is an absolutely incredible achievement by Lampard, doubt we'll see anything like it again for a long time.
Exact the same for me.Thought it would be the only time I'd ever see us play at Wembley.
Couldn't have been more wrong!
Every time I hear that, I think "so your team must be fucking garbage then?"Some will say ‘shit league this year’ but fuck em,
When you put it like that its incredible, The futures bright , the futures sky blueIf you’d said to any of us back then that in under a decade we’d be back in the championship, rid ourselves of SISU; the council and Wasps, have ownership of the arena, Frank Lampard as manager and sitting top of the league with 7 games to go with an 11 point gap of a parachute payment team in 3rd… I’d have thought you were a fucking lunatic!
But here we are, the journey back started there, as difficult as it was for any of us to see back then!
PUSB
Anyone remember the poster who said something along the lines of "my mate shat himself, literally" at the cup final?
Some great photos there mate
This was the day I missed as I was having treatment for Leukaemia in readiness for my bone marrow transplant. My son, wife and late Dad went though and they had a great day. I watched it on tele.
I was really desperate for my lad to to - he was 11 at the time - as I thought he wouldn't get much chance to go to Wembley. How wrong I was! I'd been twice, Cup Final and Charity Shield. More times now, of course.
Really was the catalyst for what was to come.
Everyone takes the piss out of that trophy, but I'm fairly sure we weren't the first team to use it as springboard to further, relative, success.
Fairly sure Southampton and Sunderland both won it and ended up in the top flight within a few years.
