If we're talking until the end of the season and not looking at the summer recruitment, it'd solve the depth issues at left back and in attacking midfield with two players who are already familiar with the club.

I think McCallum could balance the side nicely tbh and would be good challenge for Dasilva plus the ability to rest MvE without losing the long throw. Hamer fits in well for cameos when the midfield three need a break same for O’Hare and the three behind the striker. I think they’d be a perfect January

Ruling out one of the most complete midfielders I have ever seen in a City shirt since 1980 seems premature to me. Grimes is absolute class and the first name on the team sheet this season and next.

Absolutely agree, with the proviso that we are currently in the second tier and The PL has got exponentially better since 1980.
His passing is exceptional, but in the PL passing between the lines gets way harder.

Personally I think we have more than enough cover at CM this midfield to get us through the season and I wouldn’t be bringing in another one in January unless they were certified PL quality.

I expect whoever we sign in January it's with that in mind.

I think it’s really hard to get PL quality at this point TBH. Out of interest how many of last seasons promotion January signings are starting regularly?

In which case that would be a lot of money to spend on a position where we’re already well covered.

And it’s OK to be rational about players abilities and not just claim every player we have is the greatest ever. Our team can always get better and that’s no shade on those already in it.

I know, I'm not sure where I've said we can't? If we got promoted we'd need loads of new players. We also have a handful of players that could and indeed might have to, step up.

A loan with obligation to buy if promoted perhaps.

This would be an actual good signing. Not sending a life raft to O'Hare in Bluntsville.

Completely overhauling a team that got promotion seems to be working for Sunderland as it did for Forest before them, but as I mentioned previously both needed to do so having only been promoted via the play offs, and so had a weaker starting position than those promoted automatically.

It doesn't always work though. Ipswich previously had a similar team ethic that we seem to have this season and spent big in the PL, but having then been relegated and despite having a very strong squad on paper, are struggling to find that togetherness they previously had.
Ipswich went down the road of buying all the best Championship players. Clearly, not a template to follow. They went for quantity over quality.
That said, a PL side better than Sheff U should have bought Vic and Gus.

Look Gus was amazing fun to watch and probably one of my top 5 City players ever but we’ve moved on as a club and as a unit, I just don’t see how he’d fit into this team, as much as I’d love to have him back.

Rushworth
MvE Thomas Kitching McCallum
Torp Grimes
Saka Rudoni Memeti
Wright

Dovin
KKH Lats Woolf Dasilva
Eccles Hamer
BTA O’Hare EMC
Simms

Drop Eccles +1 CB and that’s your match day squad. Perfection.

Our squad is in a healthy position where there is little to no dead wood.

if we went up this year I’d be happy with Dovin, MVE, Thomas, Kitching, Dasilva, Grimes, Torp, Rudoni, EMC, BTA, Wright and Sakamoto in the squad. New contracts for MVE, Wright ETC.

Haven’t seen enough of KKH and Woolfenden but if we decided to move them on we’d have plenty of suitors. Simms and Eccles would go for decent money to a championship team. Would have no trouble finding a home for Bidwell, Lati and Allen who are proven championship players.

I’d back the recruitment team to find 8-10 players to the that nucleus of the squad that would make us capable of staying up. Our squad is a lot better than Sunderland’s was when they went up.

It's less about pushing players out of the side and more not having to pray we don't get an injury.

You’d have competition for places which is a good thing. The drop off from Torp to Allen and Andrews is sizeable for example.

We have loads of capable CMs in case we get an injury (and we’ve already had many).

If we get in a PL-calibre CM even on loan then they will expect to play every week - we’re not dropping Grimes, so does Torp get benched? I just don’t see it.

Exactly this it’s a long season and a squad game. You want to be able to take players off and not lose control like we did yesterday. And have everyone fresh for the run in. Plus frankly not throw every cup game.

In cases where we have three games in a week, being able to play someone nearer to Torp's ability as opposed to Jamie Allen's would be a clear advantage. The games where it's been just Grimes and Allen in the middle have been real hard work because it's just not Allen's game and especially not from the start.

Likewise I wouldn't be signing a winger with a view to dropping Sakamoto or EMC.

You do if you’re heading away to second in a few days. We’re going to see it more the next few months I think as games come quickly. Lampard seems to like playing players for 60/70/80 mins for a couple of the games in a three game week.

Deadly Dean Austin has got a couple of wank-worthy January signings lined up I'm sure. Lampard has talked about bringing in players a fair bit now and King certainly will want to help get us over the line and onto the gravy train.

Sheff U player of the year in the PL. Voted best player in the Championship last season. Destroyed us in both games last season. This year has been disrupted by bad management and injury.

I would love to see Hamer back, if he can shed a few pounds and get his fitness back I think he would be a great signing, offers us a great rotation option too as he can play all 3 roles in midfield. Torp is very good, fantastic technique, such a good player, but for me Hamer offers more as an all round midfielder. Would obviously have to be for the right money, with the season Sheff Utd are having and his extra weight, there maybe a cut price deal available, It's defiantly a signing I'd look to explore.
