If we have this much money to spend on a central defender then there really isn't any excuse to get a striker and a better forward thinking CM.

There is if we don't have enough spaces to register them without selling some first.

Think it’s safe to say if we were after Doyle we wouldn’t of bid 7 million for this lad

We already have one of the best forward thinking CM in the division.

We desperately need another CH as we only have Lats as cover as things stand.

Was frightening at the start of last year how short we were in terms of leadership and organisation. Bringing Kitch back in and then getting Grimes certainly helped but we could do with another. Hughes would be a great signing.

If this lad was our first choice surely we’d have gone after him weeks ago and not 3 days before the season starts, either we need to sell first ( MVE being sold ) or we did go for Doyle but couldn’t afford him ? Either way we’ve def gone up a level with our signings

One thing to consider is that IF the MVE fee is paid “upfront “ , the club could be in a position to offer that as a term. This could be very attractive to a team in terms of FFP

A lot of these numbers are likely to be the full deal potential costs…. Ie it’s £m plus performance add ons, plus more again if we go up etc … it makes for useful headlines but it’s a bit misleading ….

if we were prepared to pay £5.5in total for a keeper even though we have Dovin think we would be for a centre half too.

Not necessarily we could be making an approach to make Man City aware that their valuation is ridiculous, bit extreme admittedly.

Maybe we are securing a CH before we decide how much to accept for MVE

If we can get Hughes and a back up RB for £8.5m (just for example) Then maybe that's what we'll accept for Milan (purely guessing)

Hughes is an interesting talent and one which has very good leader attributes. Something maybe Lampard has indicated to Doug and to stick to the 'model' having a leader from someone younger who can still develop rather than highly experienced like Doyle or a Fadz like replacement.

They need to bring in a limit on the number of players clubs can have on pro contracts to stop them taking the piss hoovering up the young talent.

Ever thought of this stat, how many did we score last season and how many did we leak???? We need to sort the defence out and thankfully it looks like it is... stop the moaning and groaning and get behind the lads

Could be perfect timing to get someone from Hull. They raised the cash to pay off their football debts. It's supposedly in place now because of cash flow. They appealed today against their transfer embargo. They get the result in about 2 days. Selling a player for nearly 10m would certainly give them a cash flow. Having an offer from us would have let them go to the tribunal showing them their plans.

I'm not saying we didn't need the MVE money before making bids on him. But we seemed to have tried to buy Rushworth for 5.5m before taking him on loan. We also have this mysterious 15m cash injection we can only guess about.

I'm optimistic

I don't think sheaf and grimes is unworkable combination like some seem to be sure it is

And I also think bta and Simms can do well for us still

Maybe it is blind optimism. We shall see

Its a bit more nuanced than that though isnt it. Yes a cursory glance gives you the picture that you have just described but look any closer and you see that whilst the defence leaked, the strikers for the most part underperformed and were helped out massively by the midfield.

Can we expect the same again this year?

Maybe, but you would be better hedging the bet than trusting BTA/Simms/Bassette to perform after what we saw last term. I struggle to understand how anyone can look at their contribution regardless of overall output and be happy with it.

If we’re allowed to ignore all the first team players in a position you’re banking on our entire defence being Latibeaudiere and Jake Bidwell

Im just saying we keep pretending Haji Wright isn’t our first choice number 9. Any striker will be backup to him at best. We don’t have similar at CB who is unlikely to be dropped.

Well at the moment Haji Wright isn't fit yet and we will be starting Simms or BTA so discussion around back up strikers is topical

See above. How well Bassette as about fifth choice striker does is far less relevant than the fact if we lose Milan we’ve only got two backup defenders across the entire back four. Defence is far more of a priority than striker where our record signing and arguably top three best player plays.

That's not the full story though.

We lost Dovin through injury. Having Wilson and Collins as his replacement cost us a lot of goals especially Collins. We've already strengthened there.

Goals scored? Wright missed a lot of the season. His replacements well underperformed and this was from a side that scored the most headed goals in the top leagues around Europe. Someone with the stature of Simms should have been scoring for fun. BTA is like a headless chicken who has as much chance of hitting the corner flag as scoring a goal with his shooting. It isn't good whichever way you put it.

I know I'm quite alone with my prediction of 2nd to 4th but we're actually targeting players that will improve our starting 11 or bringing in similar that releases more cash.

I'll take it on the chin. To me it seems they are trying to do a Leeds. A solid Championship side with quality signings on top. The players coming in are all attack minded. Add to this a very good GK. A good defence with Grimes sitting in front always looking for a defence splitting pass. No way are we finishing mid table like many are predicting.

Would anyone be surprised if we won our first 4 games of the season in August against Hull H, Derby A, QPR H and Oxford A? Top of the table and full of confidence.
