Still 4 weeks to go … far too early to judge who has had a good window or not. There will be more signings for every club and probably unwanted losses in most clubs.

All had good windows

then you have the likes of Ipswich, saints and Leicester who will all be up there

then Sheffield Utd, boro, Wrexham and blues

the league is wide open and stronger than last season

Norwich have sold Sainz. Sargent might be off too.

WBA are about to lose Heggem.

Watford have picked up some freebies and their normal Udinese loans.

Schluup is the only player any of them have signed that you would have heard of before.

The narrative is wrong

Yes serious. You need to consider the players that have left. Norwich have lost a lot of goals. They received nearly £30m for 2 players alone.

WBA have signed 3 players. Would you take them? Would they improve us?

Watford have signed lots of players but looking at the list none of them stand out.

Wrexham You've fallen for the hype. They should be safe but mainly because of the state of other clubs. Mid table would be a good result for them.

Looks like now you're not getting any information it's down to your own knowledge. Signing players and improving your squad don't always go together.

So you listed clubs that haven't exactly improved but could do well to try and prove a point. Let's take a look.

Ipswich. My choice of 1st place. Reserve players that are strong.

Southampton. Could go either way. Nearly broke the record last season for the least amount of points. New manager that I wouldn't have wanted at our club. But if it all goes well they could be at or near the top.

Leicester. A shambles of a club. Overpaid for many players on big wages. Should be a points deduction on the way. Like Southampton could go either way but if they don't get promoted this season are in serious trouble. They had mortgaged their first years Prem money after relegation when they were in the Prem. They have mortgaged their next year's payment to keep going this season. Their wage bill is massive for the Championship. They can't get rid of most of their players because nobody wants to take them on.

Sheffield United rely on Hamer just like we did. They sold Souza for £13m. Have brought in 2 decent Prem loans. Not got a clue about their other 2 signings. If Hamer goes it could see them not even reaching the top 6.

Wrexham couldn't resist that.

I'm sticking with us 2nd to 4th.

You might be right but at this stage it’s hard to know. I’ve seen it in the past where clubs make 9/10 signings and flop.

The league is always competitive. Let’s see won’t we!

Interestingly NTT20 podcast had us as finishing 4th in their predictions and didn’t seem worried about our frontline. They usually have a good handle on things.

It’s the strongest league for a while, IMO, I’d be happy with 6th at this point.

What people don't seem to consider is we're the side that hasn't sold any of our 1st team. Out of the reserve players that played last season we have sold Binks and somehow managed to get £2.5 m for him. All our players have at least a year of playing together other than Grimes and he just slotted in. Our players won't need a month or two getting to know how each other play.

Add to this Rudoni has become a beast. 7 goals in his last 12 games. His extra training sessions with Lampard are paying massive dividends.

Under Lampard we got the 4th highest points. Leeds and Burnley went up. We're in a much better position than many think or are making us out to be.

That's the thing. They could be very good. They could be an Ayari that needs game time. We will only find out with game time. If they're struggling with the pace and strength it will be too late to do anything about it.

Last season was stronger IMHO. Leeds were a championship side the season before but better than the sides that came down. Luton went down again so a club less with Prem money. Only Ipswich don't have problems to overcome.

We will need to wait until about 10 games into the season to have a better idea. But it wouldn't surprise me if we are at or near the top for most of the season.

I think as it stands we just miss out on playoffs.

We’ll start better than we usually do but we’ll struggle once injuries hit and we’ll bemoan the lack of depth in certain areas.

That could all change come the end of August. It just feels like we haven’t had the interest in our players we expected meaning we’ve not been able to add what we’d like.

I can’t answer for them but my reasoning would be:

An injury to Rudoni and a lot of the creativity and goal threat leaves and we’re playing someone out of position.

Same for Sakamoto to a lesser degree.

Wright is injured and we’re resorting to two players who haven’t performed in over 12 months.

EMC injury forces Wright out wide and relying on the above again.

Kitching gets hobbled and we’re putting Lati in at LCB.

That’s a lot of ways our team gets weaker really easily. I’m certain a few will happen over a long championship season too.

We simply need reinforcements if we’re serious about this season.

Applies to most sides in the division though. Take out 2-3 of their stars and they struggle

I think if we lose 1 of our front 4 we get a lot worse quickly and if we’re serious about top 6 we need competition and quality to replace/compliment/ compete.

The one thing not considered by many is most if not all clubs have the same problem. We're in the Championship.

We’re trying to get out of the championship though and a good way of doing that is ensuring we have a better squad so we don’t fall victim to injury issues depleting us as much as it does the rest.

Lose BTA? We lose a headless chicken.

Lose Simms? On last seasons display not a massive loss.

Lose Wright? That's why we need another striker.

Of course. We're stronger than last season so far and most probably not finished yet. We have until 7pm 1st September just like everyone else.

I would imagine it’s hard to find (or financially justify signing) players that seamlessly fit into our team without any quality drop off and tell them they’ll be on the bench until one of those scenarios you mention happen?
No team in the EFL has that luxury.

Well not necessarily all to start.

We have lost Binks so need a CB

Lose a ST to sign a ST

Loan/Sell out Bassette/Raphael/Obikwu for a new winger to come in

Sell Allen for a new CM

Then sign a backup CAM.

Selling those mentioned and signing new players for depth is hardly a huge overhaul

By front 4 I mean Wright, Saka, EMC and Rudoni.

One of them out and the drop off is significant.

Currently with the squad we have and this season in general is more competitive than last, we won’t finish in the top 6.

We’re a few key signings short at the moment but that could change by the end of the window.

But name a single side that wouldn't struggle if their best players get injured.

Out of all the Championship signings so far about 100 of them wouldn't improve us. Some very good players have been signed but they're mainly replacements for players sold.

Of course we need a bit of luck with injuries. But we're not alone here. If league position came down to injuries a club might get only Ipswich would finish in the top 6.

You're allowed to make a loss of £13m a year with a cash injectionor £5m a year without. With the sales of Binks and Gyokeres going through we're close to even on transfers. So the rest will depend on our operation losses over the past 3 years.

Ah sound, cheers for that, didn’t realise the exact figures but now I know! So provided we’re not £39m in debt from the last 3 years we’re technically allowed to buy players? I realise Doug is trying to keep the club financially sound, which is clearly great, but it’s possible we can buy a few players if we’re at £0 or even making a slight loss (not saying that’s right or wrong, just that it’s physically possible).

Really then it comes down to whether taking that gamble of injecting more cash and having a boosted squad now to get us into the prem (to then recoup the prem money later) is the right move to make, or whether we should keep trying to make it through the play-offs which minor flaws in the team, realistically those seem to be the two options.

I'm surprised we haven't heard anything regarding a new CB after we sold Binks.

Unless Lampard is happy that Lati and Perry will be 2nd CB pairing, it's something we desperately need.

I don't think we will get anything near autos even 3/4th that some are predicting with the current pairing even with Rushworth.
