The evidence comes from the pissing around we did after he was sold

Yesterday showed how far we've come since Lampard and his backroom staff took over. You knew once they started rolling around like they'd been shot at the slightest bit of wind catching them that they weren't just treating it like a friendly. That's a big complement to our side.

One thing I noticed in Betis was the forward passing. Where our players pick the easier sideways ball in similar positions they'd be looking to see if the short sharp forward ball was on. Some of the passes were extremely skillful and far from the easy option.

So Wright and Simms only signed because they thought Hamer would stay? It’s nonsense.

I certainly don't disagree. But as a squad player he isn't the bad option that some make out. My guess would be one more season with us. His experience could be crucial.

I’m not sure. He’s like a sack of potatoes that’s been left in the kitchen a bit too long.

I have seen a comment that Luke Woolfenden from Ipswich may be of interest to us It's so hard finding anything these days but would he suit our CB requirement and be an upgrade?

The money was spent up building a squad largely from scratch and the wage bill was at the limit of affordability.

Well how many goals is he coming off this season compared to last?

This time last season he was full of confidence and had the fans behind him.
12 months later hes had a poor season where he managed less than half the league goals of the previous season, and many of the fans want him replaced.

How can you possibly argue that he hasn't gone backwards?

In fact his decline was so complete that Lampard chose to leave him out completely for the biggest two games of the entire season.

To suggest he hasn't gone backwards is utterly rediculous.

Just goes to show the quality of our opponents and how well we handled them. After the first 10 minutes I thought it would be more about damage limitation for us but we grew into the game.

Their last competitive game was a European final against Chelsea. Of course their players are of a better quality than ours. But as a team we matched them for a lot of the game. Our players can hold their heads up high and take a lot of confidence from this.

Absolutely no reason why he couldn't play on the right IMO. He had a few so-so games there when he first came to the club if I remember correctly, and some on here slagged off his performances, but he was finding his feet at a new club and at a level he hadn't played before. Cutting him a bit of slack you could see he was a quality player, but people seem to jump to an early judgement and never let it go.

He is a right footed footballer paid a lot of money. He needs to learn to be mor versatile.

I know someone who works at the London Evening Standard and there is talk that at least one Chelsea loanee is on the cards in the next ten days, possibly a forward.

Simms has seemingly all the attributes to be a top striker. Tall with an imposing physique, and whilst not having electric pace is no slouch. And yet his body language is terrible and certainly does him no favours. If he was to score a worldly, you feel rather than celebrate he would go around apologizing to the opposition.
As many have commented his first touch is woeful, and the ball travels faster than his shots. He is easily knocked off the ball, and seems to easily get bullied by far smaller players. He often seems to struggle to make a clean contact with the ball, and regularly seems to scuff his shots. His confidence seems shot to pieces, and near the end of last season he never really even looked like scoring. He truly is an enigma, like many i had high hopes when we signed him, but i think time is fast running out for him, many have already given up on him.
But he seems to lack that one big thing, the ability to make a goal by his own skill. Perseverance yes as at sheff wed but skill no. He could never do Vik v Sunderland away or millwall at home. Wright can do it.

Simms looks good league one right now, toiling away but never quite in the right position. BTA has a greater ability to make himself available in the right spot (but sadly is a bit headless chicken thereafter,)

He ended the previous season without having scored in six games. He hasn't gone backwards.

The point I’m making is that the club seemed to be planning on Hamer sticking around and was caught pants down when he pissed off.

What makes you say he's not versatile? He plays where he's asked to play, and I'm confident he'd play very well on the right if called upon to do so.

Think an ideal window for me looks something like:

OUT:
Collins
Bidwell
Alllen
Simms
BTA
Sheaf or Eccles

IN:
No.1 CB
Starting calibre CM
RW who carries more goal threat than Saka
ST who can push Wright
LW who can push EMC

LOAN OUT:
Perry
Obikwu
Bassette

I agree with you on exits except I’d still keep Sheaf but happy to let go of Eccles (shame but we need improvement)

Then ideally I’d want a new starting left back… and ideally I would like to see JDS leave but agree with everything else

I'm not sure if this has been discussed earlier in the thread, but does anyone know why Lati was not available last night?

Stronger midfield, more experienced goalkeeper. Two good right backs. We're ahead of where we were this time last season. We've also got the improvement in some players over 12 months too.

Heart says play offs, head says finishing just outside. Start of the season will be crucial, need to hit the ground running rather than are usual habit of making life hard for ourselves.

Of course this could all change, couple of strong signings and prospects could improve dramatically. Equally a couple of last minute raids for key players could really leave us struggling.

I like Wright and I think there's a player somewhere in Simms but I worry about how long it will take Wright to get up to speed without a pre-season and who knows if we'll get the Simms that had a good run of form or not. Don't really think we're playing a style that suits Simms either.

Allen is one who i wouldnt be against keeping on. He rarely lets us down and is a great cover option probably on less than the likes of Sheaf and Eccles.

I would be more than happy letting Kai Andrews take Allen's role coming off the bench. Give the youngster some gametime to ease him in to Championship football rather than Allen who we know isn't going to improve.

This is exactly the type of signing that would epitomize the ‘Lampard factor’
