what on earth does this even mean.
Bud do you know how to read, it means literally what it says. Let me dumb it down for you:
- Sunderland play the best way for a side going up
- Counter-attacking
- explaining counter attacking
- If we went up I’d want 80% of our backline changed (GK, CBx2, LB)
- “attacks win games defences win titles” is a reference to Fergie
- which I also used in relation to staying up, a good side is built from a strong foundation at the back

Was that easy enough for you?

Does anybody else find it sickening how Sunderland are now flinging around 20m bids all over the show. Just some weeks ago we were a Haji Wright header away from knocking them out of the play offs.

I appreciate that they sold Jobe Bellingham for 30m but, they have already spent 32m on Diarra, 23m on Le Fee, 20m on Talbi, 20m on Sadiki and about to get Adingra for 20m from Brighton. That is 100m plus and it's only mid July.

It's silly and just shows the gulf in money if you go up. They will still come back down too!

The gap is now just a joke and it feels like it will only get bigger. The way players values are going up, it's worth than the housing market!

Just makes me sad... rant over.
They'll regret it next may when they drop down again.

Our defence was poor last season (compared to the likes of Burnley who got automatic promotion)
Goalkeeper was an obvious weakness, Dovin was inexperienced, and Collins needs to be moved on, while Wilson is a no2 at best.

Our defence started the season badly and didn't tighten up until Kitchen was brought back in, but even then we were prone to conceding soft goals.

This was never more obvious than in the playoff games against Sunderland.
We gifted them the second goal at home with a horror backpass, then conceded a free header from a corner in extra time in the second leg.

We need to improve if we want to get to the next level.
A new keeper and CH must be added if we genuinely want to compete for the top 2 spots.

Wouldnt be so sure

The way they play will suit the prem. They sit and soak up pressure then hit on the counter with players with pace to burn, Isidor, Mayenda, Mundle etc

I still think they'll come down, but i don't think it will be done by Christmas like the 3 last season
I hope they do stay up and stay in the Prem. They make the Prem much more palatable than the likes of Burnley, Sheffield Utd, Brentford, Fulham etc.

A proper derby to watch against Newcastle twice a year.

Beadle is miles better than Wilson, come on now

He’s got a great reputation but having seen his debut last season for Wednesday vs us and the league games vs us last year I’m not convinced.

He was completely dominated by Ellis Simms at Hillsborough last season. Dropped the ball for the last minute winner under pressure and was ridiculously saved by a poor refereeing decision when Simms’ second “goal” was chalked off for some reason. Many Wednesday fans felt that he was similarly bullied by other opponents too and seemed content when he was dropped from the starting XI in favour of one of their own players.

Now I accept it’s probably all part of the learning process for young keepers - Trafford had a nightmare half season for Burnley in the Prem but was outstanding last season in the Championship but the problem with loan players (especially ‘keepers) is that the receiving club pays the cost of developing with few of the downstream rewards.

For my mind we should have tried to get a new starting gk for the beginning of the season. Dovin then needs to compete with them for the shirt when/if he returns to fitness and form.

We literally finished top 6 with him in goal

Indeed. He’s actually a very good shot-stopper. There are however quite a few flaws in his game that mean he’s only ever been first choice for three quarters of a season at one club.

I maintain he could have done better for all three Sunderland goals in the playoffs.

Morning Ben.

Its a complete nothing of a response that ignores the entirety of the rest of his career, the 2 seasons following that season included, the fact we looked to replace him straight after that season and the fact loads of shite players have finished in the top 6 over years which doesn't mean we should be hunting down all the worst ones like Pokemon cards. Maybe we should bring back Dabo as RB cover.

I’m pointing out that what you’re saying is in contradiction to the evidence. His career has been strange but look at Emi Martinez for a strange career. From what we’ve seen and what the stats show, he’s a competent championship keeper.

I don’t think anyone is thrilled that Wilson is our number 1, and would agree that we need better, but the idea that he’s incapable is also not right.

Unless we can offload Collins, having significant wages on a 4th keeper, doesn’t feel right. We don’t want a Derby County/Reading situation on our hands where our salary costs sky rocket.

A free transfer keeper isn't going to spiral us into bankruptcy. We are carrying a fair bit of baggage up front especially, that concerns me more financially than whatever we do in goal.

Can’t be blaming Wilson for Mayenda goal surely.

A Derby/Reading situation from bringing in a competent keeper for a season on loan or on a a free  Let's hope we're not that close to the cliff edge hey.

*Edit* Also, comparing Wilson to Emi Martinez is totally mental.

But where does the club draw the line? The principle of having four first team keepers is problematic.

If we can get Mat Ryan on decent wages then maybe, but I suspect he’ll want 10-15k a week and at least a two-year deal. We’ll then likely prioritise our investment in Dovin when he’s back from injury, so it’s money down the drain. The most likely scenario is that we don’t go up, and we’re being financially reckless.

Agreed on forwards, bloated with players that have proven not to be right. However, they weren’t signed knowing that outcome.

The key mistake is obvs by MvE. I do think that Wilson might have done better…
He scarpered out; stopped dead, tried to backtrack and stopped again. He did not send the player wide at all and was beaten before he engaged with him. The contrast to that 1 on 1 we had vs Middlesbrough is striking

Precisely, all sorts of rumours about Hull too having financial difficulties and read their owner was forced out of one of Turkish big 3 clubs.

So no relevance to our owner at all then. King has not been forced out of any club, Turkish or otherwise, as far as i'm aware.

How on earth can people be overly critical of Wilson. The season before last he was the best in the league and last season was horrendous for him due to injuries, it was very stop / start. Maybe it is because he always plays the clown and so people don't take him seriously. When we got promoted a few season ago life was less serious because expectation was not as high as now. People expect us to challenge this season and with Wilson's personality maybe they tired of his antics and wish for him to be more serious.

Because he's rubbish, when it mattered he was useless against Sunderland

Yep. If you have a midfield 3 of Grimes Torp and Rudoni and you need to shut up shop, it's Eccles you bring on before Sheaf.
I see Sheaf becoming cover for Grimes now rather than an automatic starter.
Lampard clearly rates Sheaf more than Eccles. In reality, Eccles is most likely to leave out of our midfielders and Sheaf will probably be captain.

At a minimum you lose Collins. Ryan you'd offer a 1 year contract and he has left mid season at least 3 times in his career if the chance for playing time elsewhere presents itself.

He strikes me as someone primarily wanting playing time.

Failing that get Lampard to finally pull some Chelsea strings and bring in one of the billion keepers they have on loan.

I haven't seen any evidence of this either way if I'm honest . Both played when fit and I dont remember either being benched .
Will be interesting to see how it plays out this season though as I felt Lampard played Eccles in a more advanced role

Wilson like a lot of keepers of his level is good at shot shopping but lacks in other areas and one on ones are a weakness of his

The best way to play when you go up is how they play, counter attacking, soak up the pressure with a good defence and use the pace and flair of your forwards to hit on the break. If we went up I’d want 4 replacements for our backline the only one to stay being MvE. Attacks win games Defences win titles (or in our case would keep you up)

The thing is, you can't 'soak up the pressure' against the majority of Premier League teams, because before you know it you're picking the ball out your own net for the 3rd time.

And they don't have a good defence now they are in the Premier League.

People really underestimate how big the gap is. I think they will struggle to get to 20 points.

On what basis has Raphael “clearly got ability”?

I think being fully involved in first team training & activities for a while now shows FL and the coaching staff believe he has the ability to be at that level. There is only a select few fo the u21s that have gone to Portugal. I think it's fair to assume those that have gone over there are highly thought of young players, who have been given the opportunity to put their cases forward to be involved for the season.
