Hmm depends on the system, when Haji was playing against Sunderland he did well off the shoulder.

If we looked to play more of the 4-3-3 with two 8s it could work

I think it’s because he’s been hit and miss this past 3 seasons.

Really poor at Premier league level, very good in a very good championship team, then very poor in an above average championship team.

We don’t even know if we are in anyway interested in him and already fitting him into our style of play

On paper West Brom were above average but that team was awful under Mowbray

I’d suggest it’s a bit cruel to write him off at our level for being poor in a poor prem team and then poor in a misfiring champ side

I think his trajectory is clear. He will score goals in a good team but won’t make the difference to whether a side is promoted or not.

Tbf he did score a really good goal for West Brom against us but it was wrongly chalked off for offside.

he played as a lone striker first time round in a 4-2-3-1

No one is writing him off ??

Some of us are making the point that it isn’t a no brainer. It would be a calculated gamble.

Yeah he did and clearly did it well.

Would be different in our system tho due to the rotations of the players. Dont think it be as difficult a adjustment in our tactics tbh, probably just ask Rudoni to stay higher up to help control the ball

All transfers especially strikers always feel like gambles imo but he’s got a very good record in this league. Compared with some links out there, makes him less risky (although arguably less reward due to age)

In his last full season at this level he scored 21 goals. It is pretty much a no brainer

Scored 24 goals in Southampton’s promotion season. Could work if we decide to stop crossing so much and pumping so many long balls.

there is no reason he can not play up front for us, our tactics are not even complicated,

Madders, Cole, Murphy who played at 10 that season all dropped deep a lot of the time time

Why would we change our style of play ? It’s clearly Frank’s preference ….

I was thinking about this, is it his preference or his preference with the hand he was dealt? At Derby he played with Jack Marriot up front who is about 3 foot. (And Martyn Waghorn)

I’m not saying he couldn’t as I have said I support him coming in for the right price?

Do I think he fits the same profile we use atm with Haji and Simms being more target forwards no, but think we can adapt from that. More than likely instead of asking the striker to hold it up as high as he does, we’d either put the ball behind the defence and try to use his pace or ask him to come deeper

It’s a fair shout, like you say at Derby he didn’t, then at Chelsea he had Abraham and Giroud(?), then Calvert-Lewin and Maupay at Everton (although apparently he wanted Watkins).

He’s always got for a lot of crosses from all of his clubs but nothing saying with Rudoni being the height he is we couldn’t mix it up with some low balls in

I guess the argument is with the likes of Simms up front he acts as a decoy to free up late runners in the box. If we had a more diminutive striker the defenders might not be as drawn to him to allow the space.

I think it allows two things when I’ve watched us. I think it gives us a way to relieve pressure against a high press. As we can hit the ball long and hope to have the striker hold it up.

And allows us to decoy as Simms or Wright can occupy defenders (which to his credit Simms did for several of Rudoni’s goals)

I've always assumed he just played the way he felt would get the best out of the players he inherited. We have no idea what he wants to do this summer really, will be interesting to see.

Just Saints have also tweeted saying that Saints would be open to selling Adam Armstrong this summer, I'm too not keen on taking back ex players, but at the Championship he is too good and definitely worth bringing in if available.

I wonder what sort of money they would want and also would they sell to a rival club?

Simms needs to work on parts of his game that definitely don't come naturally to him. His movement is poor and his touch has to improve. He is young enough but not sure he will get time under FL to get to the level he needs to be to stay.

Also the idea we would have to change style of play due to size of any signing is mental. High levels of balls in the box doesn't mean we go get 6ft 5 fw, we already have 2 and the game has moved on a bit from those days. Good players especially fwd find space and make the right decision once there. Size means nothing never did never will, some of the best players that have ever played the game were not higher than 5.7... Top scores in the history of the world game made size irrelevant and i hope that continues.

The clearest indicator for me was the first half hour vs Cardiff (Lampard’s first game). High energy, high pressing, win the ball back as far up the pitch as possible. Unfortunately for him all of our players were fucked after that half hour.

In general, our deliveries from wide areas need to be so much better. Quite often the ball is floated across and the defenders or keeper can deal with it quite easily. We need more variety, whipped in balls, hard and low crosses etc. Height isn't needed for those kinds of balls in, it's about the movement and timing of runs.

Armstrong related - Like with many instances, I would take him if we had monies to buy other players too. If we are hard pressed to buy players and we could only afford 1 or 2 then no I wouldn't want him, Sorry AA.

They are still in the Europa League so I doubt it. Also there players are way above our level in ability and wages.

It always came across as high risk high reward in the earlier games. Conceded so many but also scored a lot. I cant do another season of that
