The way the January window works with clubs, agents and players trying to get the biggest bang for their buck, it could be the end of January before anybody comes through the door.

I can’t believe you don’t trust the squad that’s currently bossing the league even through major injury problems that are about to abate
We've been riding our luck, and in this position there is no reason to keep on doing the same when we can easily get cover in.

yes it's been ok but most have been surprised with how players like BTA, Simms, Lati have stepped up from their previous levels. We now have 3 games with no Dasilva (who would have thought he'd be so key?) and we've had to crowbar players in to cover Tats and EmC. God knows what we do if Grimes gets crocked.

He might have time but we won't have time to let him develop. Has the physique to make it but so does Simms. If we are shopping with an eye to the future he's absolutely miles off Prem standard and with his finishing he is near the bottom of the barrel for me
I wasnt saying for us, I was just saying for himself. I wouldnt want him anywhere near us as he’s not good enough yet

Id still be keeping an eye on any no 9 type strikers that maybe available. Not a priority but a position that if the right player came along we shouldn't overlook it.

Why bring in another no.9? We have Asante, Wright and Simms scoring well and will continue to do so if they get the service. Unfortunately, our two prized wide men EMC and Saka have rarely played in the same team the last few months but it is they who produce. We need someone who is not 'new' to the EFL and needs time to bed in, we need a person who has experienced and can cross a ball.

I wonder if Basette has a recall at six months not because I want him back more the team that have him might not want him.

BTA and Dasilva are pretty good examples of why I don’t buy the narrative that multiple signings are a must. Two players who people insisted we needed to upgrade on to have a chance this season - give them a run in the squad and they’ve done really well.

No-one thinks Eccles, Allen, Bidwell etc are standout Championship players like Grimes etc. You’d have filed them in the same category as BTA and Dasilva last summer. But they’ve all done a good job in this division over the years and we can trust them to do so again.

Play Eccles or Allen…

Alternatively, how much are you prepared to pay for a backup CM who’s better than Eccles, and what are you planning to do with them next season?
Neither fill that role, we've seen Eccles thrive in a more advanced position. Allen has energy and is massively underrated as a squad member but he isn't a holding midfielder.

What is your angle here? Why wouldn't you want to have more options? It's clear Grimes is our only specialist defensive midfielder why not get backup so he can be given a break or cover if not available?

Grimes is definitely the hardest to find cover for, nobody is saying it will be easy to find the right player but It's where the scouting team will earn their oats. I'd try find a younger player with atleast some of his traits. Someone to come in and be an understudy. Loan could be an option, guaranteed game time will be a factor but not so much in the Jan window and we can offer the experience of being part of a promotion push and working with a top coaches..

all we need is another attacking midfielder and a right winger, showed on Saturday that we’ve got good cover everywhere else, just struggle when saka doesn’t play we lose rudoni out wide and Eccles plays more forward, pretty sure we‘ll get exactly what we need

Trouble is you drop Bidwell in Dasilvas role or Eccles/Allen in Grimes then it changes the whole dynamic of the setup. Brau might work in 5 but again that is dramatically switching up how we e got to where we are. I think we are all in agreement cover for EMC and Tats is a must, it would be stupid to run them into the ground and have to keep shifting player out wide.

Why do that to our selves? We aren't penniless martyrs! We are in a position of dominance now is the time to hammer that home with a few key signings.. it's been incredible how we have sustained but we have pushed our luck. Getting actual round pegs for round holes isn't going to screw any of the existing squad over, Eccles and Allen have had minutes covering Torp and Rudi and will continue too.

Just read Ipswich are apparently open to selling Szmodicz - surely be worth a punt

No, no no. There is a reason Ipswich are open to selling him. He had a fluke season a few years back, would not get in our team and would be no use to us in the PL, so we should leave well alone. Now if we could get Philogene or Jack Clarke, then that would be different!

I reckon a good Jan would look something like this (not these exact players just a similar deal for a similar type of player):

Dan Neil (Loan w/ option to buy)
Amario Cozier-Duberry (Loan)
Jeruson Rak Sakyi (Buy)
Cozier-Duberry needs to stay where he is, he'd do a Louie Barry. I'll take our recruitment teams side and go for Manneh all day.

Because if we’re almost certainly going to need to upgrade on most of our first team in the summer, I don’t want to spend money now on players who aren’t even good enough for our first XI in the Championship.

This is just how squads work though? We’re not going to sign carbon copy replacements for every member of the team.

If we do get injuries (and lord knows we have) then we have to bring in different players - we’re lucky that we have expensive and/or experienced options in almost every position.

Talk about counting your chickens! Let's worry about that when we get there and not gamble that put 1 DM and 2 Wingers stay fit the entire season hey?!

Just really want a tricky direct winger with some pace.

Just written a piece recommending a signing for each Championship club. Let me know what you think of the Coventry suggestion!

Think I’d be pretty disappointed if we loaned a L1 player in ngl

Nah, he had his peak and because he did nothing in the Prem, I’d avoid. Good player, but he isn’t a younger player who could develop in 2-3 seasons.

Lower down the table he’d be a stud in the right environment.
