Not saying ahead of anyone, just if he's in the middle he can left the other 2 carry the ball etc.

When Rose came into the side later in the season his use of the ball was revolutionary TBH. Stopped the awful “to the wing back, back to you, turn like an oil tanker, to the other CB, get it back, lump it up, lose possession” we’d been cursed with.

I agree with that 100%. Lack of fitness left me a bit concerned made a few mistakes and generally worried me. However I think he’s a great player and it was all down to lack of games.

For me you need defenders who can pick a pass or you need a big lump up front to win headers from the long balls forwards (or some pace if they’re over the top). Personally I’d like us to keep being a team that builds from the back so I really want Rose to progress.

I think a lot of players had mistakes in them when they first stepped up. Sheaf, Dabo, even Hamer spring to mind. All good enough and just need experience of knowing what they can get away with at this level.

Never turn your nose up at a bean pole centre forward for some last minute lumping it into the box.

Murphy's an interesting one - Jim Blyth used to absolutely slate him whenever he was summariser on CWR!

I wouldn't go that far, but I do sometimes wonder if spectacular is, half the time, because a keeper's positioning is a bit out.

Murphy would save the ones he should be saving, but Westwood was the last one I think where he’d save the ones he had no right to get near.

I think its right that we were a bit spoiled with Ogrizovic and Hedman, I remember when Hyldegaard started and the difference between a Premier League keeper and… well Hyldegaard became rather apparent, it was a huge shock. Poor old Scott Shearer though- one of those where you actually felt sorry for him.

I really didn't rate Hedman, mainly for the reasons stated above. Even though Oggy was past it by that point, I always felt the defence looked somehow more secure with him there, as he could communicate with them, get them working as a unit better - and Hedman was prone to the spectacular, but I'm not entirely sure that wasn't just because he was a bit off with his positioning.

Considering Alan Hodgkinson had a stellar reputation as a goalkeeping coach, to bring us Debec and Shearer wasn't his best reference!

(I forgot Clayton Ince as another we were spoiled with, btw!)

I think Hedman was a better shot stopper, but had less command of his area & the defence. You'd have Ogrizovic over him every time for sure.

Christ, Debec...

Ince was weird, played against us for Crewe and was so good that our fans applauded him off after making countless excellent saves- we could have played all night and not scored past him... so we sign him and never play him- did he make just one appearance?

I also remember Pegguy Arphexad rocking up for a few games, I have no memory if he was good or bad, so he was probably secure enough

Murphy loved a penalty save. I’d put him first over the likes of Burge, RCC, Dunn, Allsopp, Colin Doyle (lol).

There was that game away at Upton Park in our relegation season, Kevin Nolan scored to make it 1-0. Murphy really kept the score down.

It’s not just Hyams passing I don’t rate (and it’s his pass selection rather than his completion rate I have an issue with), several forwards made him look silly last season.

Sunderland was a poor move for his career in terms of actual playing time, but it was great for his bank account.

Granted he was unlikely to get ahead of Mignolet, but they never really gave him a chance, not on a consistent basis anyway. Even though, if memory serves, he actually performed very well when he was ever called upon to deputise.
