They’ve really invested full stop! Lost around £100 million in the last 4 years I think with £60 plus million losses last season

I think that’s what Ashworth would like people to believe he will have had hardly any input in the development of Foden etc their own academies have done that work, as with a lot of the roles at the fa a role with a fancy title and salary but no real substance.

Ashworth will do a good job at Brighton though because he is back where he can make a difference and already seems to be, Brighton will suit him as they are small enough to get players through.

OK, basically I think we need to sign the Brighton U23 defence. Christian Walton is out of contract at GK. Get Østigård back on loan, get Haydon Roberts in on loan, 18 left sided CB been at Rochdale this season.

I’d also sign Györkeres permanently, try and get Twine and Ogbeta in and Walsh and James on frees. Loan in some pace going forwards from the Prem. Nice balanced squad that can play 3412/532/433/541

Walton (£0)
Rose Østigård (L) Roberts (L)
Dabo Hamer James (£0) Ogbeta (£600k?)
O’Hare
Walker Györkeres (£1m)

Wilson
Pask McFadz Hyam
Dacosta Walsh (£0) Eccles Reid
Twine (compo £500k max?)
Godden Biamou

Bilson
?? Drysdale McGrath
Rowe Burroughs Ngandu Newton
Bapaga
Tavares Nee

Extra: Jones, loanee forward with pace

Total spend: £2.1m (less than last season)

Players out: Marosi, Mason, Kelly, Shipley, Allen, Jobello, Kastaneer, Hilßner, Bakayoko, Williams, Thompson, Bartlett, Bremang

Players in: Walton, Ogbeta, James, Walsh, Twine, Györkeres, U23 CB

Loans out: Sheaf, McCallum, James, Østigård, Györkeres

Loans in: Østigård, Roberts, pacy forward (unless Tavares really kicks on)

I like a lot of this. Getting Osti, Ogbeta and Walsh in would be my dream summer. Only real change I'd make is going for a more experience keeper like Ruddy to be a calm head at the back with McFadzean hopefully being gradually eased out the team.

EDIT: And someone to challenge O'Hare at CAM.

Yeah the age of the defence would worry me a bit.

I can’t see us spending big on a striker, I think Robins has to back Walker as his man now.

As much as I fancy him, I don’t think Godden is a championship striker and if a league one side was to come in with a bid north of half a million could we really say no. In saying that, he would’ve probably scored over 10 goals if he stayed fit so maybe he is good enough.

What we do in that position will be interesting. Hopefully Biamou is shipped out and we bring in a Prem loan (Gyo obviously a possibility) and then another striker with different attributes. If Gyo does return, I guess we will need to be looking at someone with pace.

That wouldn't be a bad summer's business. Can't see us being able to offload all those players though, even for free, so some will be hanging around or hopefully we could farm the out on loan.

Don't think I'd pay £1m for Gyo though. Maybe around half that. I think the U23 defender may end up being G Burroughs.

Yeah thinking about it probably closer to £750k for Györkeres, was thinking around the Walker fee but slightly more proven.

Agreed. Not forgetting he got Boothroyd involved in the England setup purely because he is his pal rather than actually getting in a progressive, modern coach to work with the talent we're producing.

Don't think it'd be a disaster if we had the same 4 from this year (i.e. minus Baka). In an ideal world I think we'd want to upgrade but think Walker & Godden are good enough, plus a prem loan. Would maybe bring in a free agent if there's a promising young one available.

Biggest thing would be to add a bit of creativity/goals in midfield/AM. If Walsh is available would be good (injury concerns aside). Would also look at someone like Scott Twine as a compliment to / competition for O'Hare. That's been a weak spot this year, which has lead to O'Hare being overplayed at times and having limited alternative when he's needed a rest or not playing well.

I am not sure I would pay a fee for Gyokeres. He did well on Saturday but I am far from convinced that he is good enough. We need someone higher level surely.

Neither are proven at this level, but Walker has done it at league one level. Gyökeres did well in the German second tier. Would imagine he'd be in the same 750k - 1m range as Walker.

He's been good the last few weeks. Suffered when he first came in for not playing much the first half of the season. Still young, could be a decent investment.

He's got more to give as well. Even sat at times he looked clumsy but bulldozed his way through. I hope we re sign him

He has some assets for sure but are we really sure he is good enough. His control of the ball is poor for this level.

Gyokeres could be a could be a good signing. He's a bit of a diamond in the rough like Jutkiewicz was. He's got some good attributes that need to be polished up and with Godden's injury record, he'll definitely get time to develop.

Not advocating that we sign Reach as he's been dreadful this season, but something makes me think that he's going to find it difficult for a club to offer him even half of his currently salary given that he could be part of a relegation side.

Equally, you have to bare in mind the current financial constraints clubs currently find themselves in. Clubs are going to be far more reluctant to throw money at below par players for the sake of filling a squad as many will still be running on fumes and simply can't afford it.

I feel players of Reach's ilk are probably going to experience a serious reality check this summer as the days where they could blag netting £15-20k+ pw off the back of a half decent season or two that occurred three years prior to their latest move are long gone.

I know this is a controversial view and Hyam has started more than anyone else I think, we desperately need to improve the defence and the difference in distribution between say Rose and Hyam, or Dabo and McCallum is night and day. We’d be a completely different proposition if we had a left side that matched our right.

Same as McCallum, as much as Hyam has come on this season, and as many good things he does, his decision making and use of the ball really hold us back offensively.

Robins saying there's no room for him to be sentimental with out-of-contract players this summer has intrigued me...and makes me wonder if Kelly, McFadz, Biamou and Hyam (even with his 1-year option) could all be off.

Would make for a very interesting summer.

Does my head when people say such and such would command this pay as that's what they currently earn, even when there's absolutely no chance they'll get that again.
Reach as an example will probably still command a bit more than we'd be willing to pay, but he won't be getting what he's on now that's for sure.
Even more daft when people do it for out of contract players in their 30s.

Would be staggered if we didn't keep Hyam, who has been a virtual ever present. Kelly presumably depends on fitness. I could see the other two going either way

Depending on how much Boddy is clued up or whether he was taking in general terms or specifically about this club thinks there will be a slight downward pressure on wages.

As we now know the financial constraints, two strategic options seem to appear.

Option 1. Last year, and with slightly less money than this year , the three main incomers were Hamer (wages and salary) allegedly for >£1m, Walker and O'Hare (both 'wages only'). Therefore all things being equal, that is what should happen this year - three maybe four new players. Not enough to fill all the seven genuine holes in the squad - goalkeeper, central defencex2, LWB, attacking midfield and strikerx2. The difference to be made up by 4-5 loans.

James is a possible for midfield, but is he inventive enough? If not Walsh himself then someone like Walsh is needed. It has been the big missing this year. Would Bristol loan him again?

Option 2. The Barnsley variant. Sell O'Hare, buy a new attacking midfielder who may not be as inventive but maybe scores more goals. And with the change we are left with, plug some more gaps.

A lot will depend not on what we want but what is available - particularly out of contract.

That's from back in January, not long after signing. Their season is finished & he's about to be released (again) by all accounts. Hardly pulled up trees in a woeful league - such a waste of talent.
