Surely the most underachieving side in our history?

Keane, Whelan, Aloisi, McAllister, Hadji, Frogatt, Chippo.

One of the best home records that year iirc but didn't win a single away game all season. Just 4 away wins would have put us into Europe and if we had equalled our home form that year we would/could have finished 2nd.

We scored just 9 away goals in 19 games. In contrast we scored 38 goals in 19 home matches.

3-2 Boxing Day followed by 2-2 draw with Chelsea a few days later (think both were on a Sky) next home game was the 3-0 cup win over Burnley when a certain chubby someone was mascot.....

Very fond memories of that season, the home game against the Vile in particular. Some crazy Highfield Rd games, too: Leeds, Bradford, Sheff Wed and Arsenal seen to stick out.

Strachan's away game tactics were truly appalling in that season; tried going for the old Martin O'Neill suppression tactic but he didn't use Keane as a forward very often and went 5 in midfield.

Imagine the season we'd have had with a standard-ish tally of away wins? 5 or 6 maybe? We'd have been on 19 or 20 wins, top 8 definitely.

Never forgave Strachan for a lot, but his away day bungling that season was just ridiculous.

Despite all the superlatives around Keane he only scored in two away games all season. He didn't score for the last 14 away games and only scored 1 in the last 10 games in total.

That's because Strachan used very odd away day tactics, that pushed Keane too deep. Very, very negative and sloppy. We lost 5-1 to Tranmere in the cup that year, which just shows how truly abysmal Strachan's tactical ability was.

I still for the life of me cannot figure out how Keane managed to score that winning goal. What a game that was though.

I went to that too. We took shed loads (4K I think). We played abysmally. And then our car broke down on the way home to top of a really sh*t day.

No. Keane, McAllister and Hadji. I agree Hadji was too inconsistent but he was a top top player, when he played well he was unstoppable. Just a shame Strachan couldn't get it out of him.

Chippo was decent and worked hard but I think he found his level in the Championship.

That team has to be right up there with Coleman's team of 'superstars' who went out with a whimper when we needed to win at Charlton to stay up. But for the witdth of a post we were down that year and the players really didn't give a flying f**k. I remember seeing Danny Fox's face at the end when they came to celebrate with the fans that they'd stayed up and thinking that they didn't care one way or another.

Think that was the start of the total Strachan disintegration at Coventry that lead to the relegation the next season.

Was Charlton! Sorry, was thinking of the Derby game when we beat them 2-0 on our run to the quarters.

My memory says 2-0 up at half-time, then losing, but it's increasingly hazy as time goes on.

Definitely Roussell with both goals.

Last away game of the season Wetherspoons in Watford town centre - if you were there you'd know, one of the best pre-game drinkup/party I've had, absolute picture on police faces as they were going to come into the pub fearing it was kicking off to see both set of fans partying. great memories.
