17 goal a season striker (3 Viewers)

I have just been doing some research. Who here would be happy if we had a 17 goal a season striker?

We actually do already. Mcsheffrey 2005/2006 scored 17. No-one has scored more in one season since 1997/1998 when Dion Dublin got 23.

Just goes to show if you show a player the goal he will score, if you shove him on the wing like last season, he won't. I know he's older, but you can't really say he's past it yet, the boy is only 29.

I hadn't really thought about it, but what about Juke and Sheffers up front with a creative midfielder at the tip (struggling to think who could do this in the current squad)?

We really could do with McSheff helping out with some goals this season, for the time being I would keep him at the tip of the diamond formation as at times last season I thought he was starting to look good.

We've just spent £400k on a striker, no way are we going to leave him on the bench!

We needed backup whether he is on the bench or not. Just cause we bought him doesn't mean we have to play him, if we have a proven player at this level in that position then we should favour him.

You do realise he was on the wing when he scored that. Stern John and Dele Adebola were upfront and Sheff was on the Left.

Isnt the reason we bought McDonald the fact he scored 25 last season Rich ? Surely we have to give him a chance ?

I think the reason Sheffers works at the tip of the diamond is that he is hard to pick up there and doesnt need to get involved in the more physical side of the game. Play him in the front two and he is constantly going to be up against the bigger defenders, and having lost some pace he is going to be less effective. He has freedom at the tip of the diamond he doesnt have being in the front two

Yes he did score 25 in league 2. Just thinking about options here OSB. No-one says Mcdonald will set the world on fire here, didn't Eastwood do amazingly at a lower level?

Just thinking about contingency really.

Sheffers hasn't looked anything like the player that left us though has he? i think give Cody a shot and hopefully sheff can chip in from the tip posistion. If he is gonna score from upfront, there is no reason he cant score a few from there.

1) Mcsheffery was a better player then
2) Mcsheffery played left wing then
3) Pretty sure a lot of them goals were pens
4) Mcsheffery was awful against Leicester up front,

Exactly, in Cov shirt i only remember 2 or 3 seasons MAX where he was decent. Always been an over-rated player, if he wasn't from Cov alot of fans would put him in the Eastwood bracket.

What we need is two strikers and then others that can score helping out. If Sheffers plays in an attacking midfield position it will be like having another striker on the pitch whilst attacking.

Didn't he start up front against Liecester? The fella looked lost! I reckon he's most dangerous from midfield, if he wants to be

Ah, the old 'he only scores penalties' myth. Check his stats on soccerbase.

He scored the 17 while playing from the left, he will get some joy working in the space created by Juke upon his return.

Last season was the highest amount of games he has played for a while and it should stand him in good stead for this season.

Mifsud got 17 2007/8 season.

No I said that we already had a striker who has scored 17 in a season for us. The last time anyone scored more than that was Dion. Further to my point, is Mifsud still with us? No! so wtf has that got to do with us already having a 17 goal a season player?

Darling (said in a rather camp manner)

Not really disagreeing, always a chance of goals with McSheffrey, but would prefer him wide of a front three or on the wing contributing the goals.

He is much more accurate than Juke(Then again,a Met Office long term weather forecast is more accurate than Juke)

Sheffer's is living on his past records, He needs to start doing something this season else he will not get a new deal and could find himself falling through the leagues. Would like to see him get a good run of games on the left of the diamond.

Dont think left of diamond is a good idea because of his defensive frailties. Would leave Hussey very exposed and isolated. Tip of the diamond I think is better

I didn't say he only scored pens so don't twist my words to suit you, but tbf I just checked and he only scored 3 pens that season so he scored 16 league goals and 1 cup goal with 3 pens in the league.
Anyway I don't wish to argue about if Mcsheffery was good 5+ years ago, my point was he never played striker then. He is better as a support player getting forward to help a front 2 rather than spearheading the attack himself.
He was awful when played upfront against Leicester and is not the answer to our striking problems.

Alright, alright! Calm down. You said you were pretty sure a lot of his goals were penalties. I said that was a myth. Nothing more, not a twist in sight.

The real Sheffers myth is that he's a striker.

He plays best when he can drift onto made by the strikers. Too lightweight for a striker always has been.

I love it when people say "put him up front" the same as they did with Mifsud. The thing is they scored most of they goals from being on the wing so the argument for them being up front doesn't really stick.

If McSheffrey got his act together like the good couple of games he had at the end of last season and plays at the tip then he may do well, he doesn't work in this formation on the left as it means he needs to defend which he can't do. He has lost some of his pace and confidence from the first time round.

Im pretty certain mifsud stopped scoring when he was put out wide.

I wouldn't say he played as an out and out striker, under Dowie he was almost part of a front 3 rotating between Mifsud, Best, Adebola and Simpson.
The goals didn't really stop until Coleman came in and he was shoved as a wide midfielder and was given defensive duties.
