Football in its present format is unsustainable with many clubs operating at a loss - apart from the Sky rich Premier division.
Whilst many will want to cling on to the present format of four divisions of 92 plus the Premiership and be reluctant to change out of nostalgia and club loyalty, then possibly clubs will need to merge and form leagues of fewer professional teams.
For example, Bristol clubs to merge, Sheffield clubs likewise, Coventry and Birmingham, Port Vale and Stoke ... and so on.
How do you think football will look like in 100 years time ?

World league. It won’t be a contact sport and men and women will be in the same team

Sisu will have just lost jr15

Tim fisher junior is calling for 3 senior robotic judges for the review

absolutely no need for clubs to merge, crowds are healthy enough to sustain the clubs we have they just need to live within their means.
Clubs underwriting 20 million pound losses in the Championship to try and get in the EPL probably isn't sustainable.

Can’t wait for the Euro super league. Hope they get rid of promotion and relegation to it and all the money and exposure heads there then we can return to something like normality. Hopefully within 10 not 100 years though.

I think a Europe League is inevitable in the next 10 years and maybe a World League in the distant future. The structure of football has to change in order for clubs to survive. Not so long ago there were Divisions 1, Division 2 and Divisions 3 North and South. Change will always be necessary.

The OP is good but I am not sure if the suggestion of Birmingham and Coventry needing to merge is a wind up? Coventry is in the top 10 biggest cities in it's own right in England and Birmingham (albeit with 2 clubs) the second most populous.

That said I would 100% agree many clubs could go amateur and professional ones could merge to ensure they have full stadiums and sustainable fan bases aka revenue streams.

On a wider point anyone who lives in a big city where there is a decent football team to watch and supports there children supporting a Sky Team is helping to write football's suicide note. Marketing money and the glamour/hype around big clubs is ridiculous and pernicious. I hope in Coventry we are raising a generation able to see past it?
I like watching the big games as I love football but if that's all I had it would feel empty and hollow.

Loads of coastal clubs or low lying will cease to exist due to global warming so the league will be a lot smaller. East Anglia will be under water.
CCC will have given Norwich city a brand new stadium all of its own as long as it retains the name Norwich City.

The structure doesn't have to change.
The greedy pursuit of increased wealth within the game does. That's what's unsustainable.

100 years time - god knows what it'll be like. By then the entire game may well be officiated by technology and as has been said actually being in the stadium will be totally unnecessary. By then you'd probably have some form of camera all over the pitch and even on the players so you can watch a game as if you're actually on the pitch and from a players perspective.

In much shorter time spans than that we'll see the PL eventually implode and the money train ends in this country. A Euro and probably World league will be in place using a franchise system, so there'll be far fewer professional teams so fewer players but those that do it will make eye watering amounts and transfer fees could bankrupt countries. I'm hopeful that the grassroots game will still be quite similar.

I also think we'll have seen a big growth of the women's game.

Which is why it’s a shitter our council sold our stadium to a Buckinghamshire based rugby club for 250 years. Agree?

Players will wear GPS trackers which will show if they're offside. Spectators will be encased in biodegradable cylinders that can be stacked on top of each other to increase capacity. The ball will be replaced with a balloon for health and safety purposes.

I predict just 12 teams in the top tier and will consist of:
Corinthian-Casuals
Burgess Hill Town
Bishop's Stortford
Forest Green Rovers
Yeovil Town
Coventry City
Plymouth Argyle
Manchester
Wolverhampton Wonderings
Newport (IW)
London United
Birmingham Villa

I actually have a (somewhat outlandish) theory that the Premier League and Championship might end up merging into a two tier closed league system, based on nothing more really than the amount of money being pumped into clubs high up in the Championship. Especially if this European League never comes about.

Idk about 100 years but (hopefully) soon a euro/world league will be created to solve English football’s problems.

This point is more for the 'rule changes' than what I expect to see in 100 years time, but part of me would much prefer each league to be a maximum of 16 teams (30 games a season) and get rid of midweek games, or save them for cup competitions/postponements etc. From that I see the top 4 promoted, bottom four relegated and the middle 8 stay where they are.

On a purely selfish point of view I'd much prefer it to be played in the warm summer months because I bloody hate the dark, wet and cold.

I'd also say that any team playing in Europe etc doesn't play in a domestic cup competition like the League Cup. They're always moaning about the number of games and injuries sustained (even though they've got squads so big they could have a separate one for each competition) so lets reduce the workload a bit and give someone else a chance to win a trophy for a change.

So much about that song annoys me.

"Not much has changed but we live underwater"
Yeah, hardly notice would you. Surprised you even brought it up to be honest.

"And your great, great, great granddaughter is pretty fine"
Your great great great granddaughter would be about 850 years old! Nivea and L'Oreal must really up their game in the next century or so!

Global warming will mean teams have to play naked.
This will result in players spending more time in the gym and most people prefering audio commentary over visual viewing.
