We also turned down the chance to buy Neil Lennon when Atkinson was manager

In comparison obviously.
Couple of great goals he and Sean Flynn scored at Bramhall lane Christmas 1991 tho.

I thought he didn't sign because Ron wanted him to sign as a centre half

Kevin Beattie
Dennis Wise (when at Wimbledon)
Albertz & McCann (Rangers)
Zenden
Trezeguet
Van Bronckhurst

Had the opportunity for Jordan Henderson after his loan spell, and Andy Carroll but Sisu wouldn't fund it. Can't imagine they would have cost a lot as both were not established at the clubs.

Didn't Sunderland changing their manager also stop that?

Didn't JH get fans player of the season even though it wasn't even a full season long loan or am I imagining that?

You must be imagining it. He only played 10 games for us!

I'm not sure who did win player of the year that season but looking at the squad from that time I presume it must have been one of Westwood, Fox, Dann or Gunnarsson.

Suspect this was a slight bending of the truth from Ranson. Sunderland had absolutely no intention of letting Henderson go.

Henderson did not get player of the year. That was Gunnarsson.

Was thinking earlier today that Rushworth is miles ahead in my ranking for player of the season. Only one other loanee has ever received that honour.

…..

There have been five other goalkeepers since 1967 when the award was first awarded.

And for the ones who got away thread…

Žan Vipotnik - the championship top scorer would have come to us rather than Bordeaux in 2023 but the then Brexit rules wouldn’t have allowed him a work permit for the UK.

He went to France for a season. He established himself in his national side which would have got him more points anyway, and the rules were relaxed by then in any case.

Liam Walsh was the loanee player of the season.
Walsh won goal of the season. My mistake

Walsh got Players Player of the Year but not the main (fans vote) award, that went to Dabo.

The loanee Player of the Year was Warnock.

We bid for Martial Godo in the summer - he has scored 12 in 18 starts for Strasbourg.

Apparently has prem teams sniffing around now. Wouldn't surprise me if we tried again if we get promoted

Was just looking at Marco Rente's progress. Think the post Brexit rules scuppered us getting a work permit on him after Hyam was sold.
