I think this was the first time anything like this was done on TV... certainly in this fashion. No one had a frame of reference to see through it.

It's probably a bit of a stretch to expect any government official to have the intelligence to correlate the two things together.

Seem to remember this on TV - was on BBC I think. Loads of people fell for it completely.
