Match Thread Coventry City at Crewe Alexandra Match Thread - Saturday 17th Mar

This is the business end of the season. Portsmouth really kicked it up a gear in the last 10-11 games and we have to do the same. The gap on Notts County is 5, with a game in hand and we’re 1-2 results from overtaking either Mansfield or Wycombe, with Exeter seemingly keen on imploding any...

Automatic promotion is well and truly within our reach. Another 4-6pts from our next two games please!

I’m feeling very optimistic so I’m going to predict 3-0 to us. JCH, McNulty and a midfielder. I’d go with more or less unchanged from the Luton game. Reid was a little bit disappointing bar one cross and his shot.

    Youth players signing new deals

It was also probably the reason a team like Leicester wanted to sign him... I think Harries also got into team of the tournament too (I’m not 100% sure, so correct me if I’m wrong).

    Gary McSheffrey

I’m 23, and I’ve seen only 3 of those players play. Big Mo, McSheffrey and Richard Shaw (competitively, I went to Gynn’s Testimonial). The nearest player to a legend in my time as a supporter, was Kieran Westwood or McSheffrey - and I throughly disliked him as a player in his second spell to be...

A tribute to our demise by opposition fans

I have to say, I burst out laughing when they were singing ‘Premier League, you fucked it up’... you’ve got to have a good sense of humour But when Luton were singing the Chanpionship verse... I was thinking, they went one better and got relegated to non-league - it’s all tongue in cheek.

Burge, 7 - getting a lot of hate for the goal, which I think is harsh. He came out and missed the cross - but JCH let his man have a free header and as Esoterica pointed out, the overall organisation at set piece was amiss. Made a v good save to keep it 2-1. Grimmer, 6 - looked a bit sloppy...

    Is automatic promotion realistically achievable?

Why is this result so significant? We’re not in direct competition with Luton now. It wouldn’t make a difference had beat Luton, and say drew to either Crewe or Grimsby. There’s 30pts to play for still... it’s up to us to pick up as many those as possible.

    Is automatic promotion realistically achievable?

Firstly, I agree with you, which is why I went out of my way to say I think we’ll finish 4th or 5th. However, none the teams around us are showing particularly good form atm. You could argue we’re in the ascendency, with 8/12pts from our last 4 games; Wycombe, Mansfield, Barnet and Luton...

    Is automatic promotion realistically achievable?

I think we’ll sneak in to the autos on as low as 6 wins (with 3-4 draws). If we win 7 games, it puts us on 79 points and that’s usually enough for autos - then add in a draw or two you’re on about 80-81pts. Our run in is ‘easier’ our competitors and all of them have been inconsistent so I...

    Is automatic promotion realistically achievable?

We just have to worry about ourselves, we’ve got to, and really should, win our next two games. If we get positive results, things will take care of themselves. For example, Notts County play Mansfield this weekend - one of those teams is dropping points. We have 2 of the top 8 left to play, and...

    Is automatic promotion realistically achievable?

Is it 'realistically achievable', yes. But, we have to start winning a few games on the bounce. By no means should we expect autos - I'd take playoffs now. We've got a game in hand on Notts County and we play them in the near future so we could feasibly catch them up. Our run in, on paper at...

    Next 3 games

That is true, but for Luton, that is a dip in form both defensively and offensively. They're going away against a team with two clean sheets on the bounce that clean sheeted them away, when they were on the top of their game. They've also not won in 3, whereas we're unbeaten in 3, so it's a...

But he also had 6 assists, so his 5 goals and 6 assists over 19 games is still, as of today, responsible for 29% of our goals. To put that into perspective, he's been injured for nearly 20 games and he's still responsible for over a quarter of our goals - his goals vs Port Vale and Lincoln were...

    Next 3 games

As good as Luton have been over the season, they’ve only scored 10 over their last 6 games and they’ve only kept one clean sheet. So they’re not the threat they were, say, when we beat them 3-0 at their place. It’s an absolutely winnable game for us and it’s come at a good time, and we’re the...

    Promotion feel?

Indeed, but Notts County and Luton have the points banked, Exeter know they have to win. Since Exeter’s form hasn’t been paricularly great, I probably can’t see them dragging themselves over 12 games they have left. Carlisle could maybe do something, but us, Swindon, Exeter and Lincoln all...

    Promotion feel?

A lot of people seem to have Exter pencilled in for 3rd. Their form hasn’t been much better than ours of late and their goal difference is worse than ours, in fact, only Swindon have a worse GD than Exeter in the top 9. The reality is, from any team could feasibly make the autos from 3rd to...

Jones was a devastating player because he could score or create a goal scoring opportunity from nothing. 100% he’s such a miss for us. We’ve tried to play counter attacking football, and it’s worked all (calendar) year at home. We’ve only lost to Accrington. Swindon were head and shoulders...
