I think they wanted to publicise the issue as much as possible. I’d guess that not many people disagree with their cause, so visibility is their main concern.

I think @fatso is highlighting an important point here - it’s time that the West stopped giving Iraq such an easy ride. Maybe some sort of intervention might even be necessary?
