    yes i would assume one of the new carbon-plated trail shoes would be ideal...... but given my fell background i'm pretty sure footed, so i'll be happy in road shoes..... also saves me blowing £200 on a pair of shoes that in all likelihood i'll only race in once.

    Its the Forest Of Dean Spring Trails Half Marathon. Its not really my thing, but its the qualifying race for the England Masters team (top 6 in each age group qualify) Also the British Trail Running Championship..... so it'll be a high quality field.

    I went down to Forest Of Dean to reccy my trail half marathon in a fortnight's time. I'll probably wear road shoes, although its on forestry trail for the most part.... but i wouldn't want to run it at full race pace in fell shoes, its too hard underfoot. Its far from a road race though...

    That was horrific. Weekend before xmas if i remember. I'd parked my car on the seafront for the weekend and the spray from the sea covered it and it all froze. I got so smashed after the match, my brother had to drive us home the next day.

    On fell races i'd always eat "real food" going up a steeper climb, just slow the pace, don't lose much time as i'm a strong climber anyway, and if its steep enough everyone is down to a power-walk anyway. Its only a few mouthfuls of bombay mix or pork scratchings, only takes a minute, but yes...

    I've used SIS before without issue, but it really is a personal thing. When i do long fell races, say 3hrs+ i prefer to take real food, ie a bit of Bombay Mix or similar. But thats fine if you're wearing a bumbag or race rucksack. Not really practicable in a road marathon though!
