Match Thread Coventry City - Sunderland Match Thread - Saturday 26th Aug

I think that’s just one of a few Newcastle-centric choices aimed at our visitors today…

    Refereeing

This is what I’m trying to say is the case for football referees!

    Refereeing

The whole point of performance-related pay is that better pay ultimately inspires better performance! I thought this was a relatively uncontroversial point - you hear teachers making the same argument all the time, for example. If there was more money in refereeing then I have no doubt you’d...

    Refereeing

Let me put it another way then. If a new position came up at your work, with the same responsibilities and title as your current role but double the salary, and your bosses told you and the rest of the staff that the position would be awarded to the best performer on the team, how would that...

    Refereeing

Well I know I’ve certainly taken my well-paid jobs more seriously than my low-paid ones - do you think the salary had nothing to do with it?

    Refereeing

You’re mistaking ‘consistent vs inconsistent’ for ‘good vs shit’. People harp on about refs needing to be consistent over everything, but that will just make for a less interesting game. I don’t expect to enjoy the results every week, but that’s part of the fun. Consistent refereeing isn’t the...

    Refereeing

Well as much as we wouldn’t like to admit it, they’re probably right. Unless you don’t see any correlation between increased pay and increased professionalism?

    Refereeing

The more incentives you offer in any job, the greater likelihood you have of attracting better candidates, and the more committed they are to maintaining good performance.

    Luton Town

I’m not sure we’d have done any better in the same two fixtures. (Although presumably we’d have at least been able to keep our home games from being postponed)

    Refereeing

I’m not saying refereeing decisions should be completely random - I’m saying that, much like the players themselves, they’re inconsistent by nature. And therein lies the appeal/intrigue of football as a game.

    Transfer Rumour David Brekalo

Is there any indication he’s unhappy with his current playing time? I imagine he’s going to see plenty of minutes as things stand. We are clearly in a different financial position now compared to January, so unless he’s agitating to leave then I don’t see why there’s any pressure to let him go.

    Refereeing

It’s impossible for referees to be consistent all the time, and even if they were, it would make the game less interesting.

    Transfer Rumour David Brekalo

I don’t really get why there’s so much speculation about him leaving - he’s a solid, versatile player who has been a consistent performer for quite a while now. Replacing him wouldn’t be easy or cheap.

The bun somehow manages to not even be the least appealing part of the picture!

    Women's World Cup 2023

I posted that article to point out a basic factual inaccuracy in your argument. Not because I’m ‘virtue signalling’ or ‘taking the moral high ground’ or whatever other buzzword you typically throw in at this point of the discussion. Neither of us had posted about this until last night so I’m...

    Women's World Cup 2023

Well all I’m saying is that if someone is on the wrong end of inappropriate behaviour, and would usually be resigned to just having to deal with it (“What am I supposed to do?”), but instead finds support from other people to the point where they decide to call it out, I find that encouraging...

    Women's World Cup 2023

Would you say the same about Mason Greenwood’s girlfriend, seeing as she didn’t report being abused until long after it allegedly began?

    Women's World Cup 2023

That’s not true - she publicly said directly after the game (in the changing rooms, in fact!) that she didn’t like what happened, “But what am I supposed to do?” https://abc11.com/luis-rubiales-jennifer-hermoso-world-cup-kiss-on-lips-spain/13680845/ Who are we to say when it’s too late for her...
