I agree he was probably bought to pay LWB, but for me a good wingback should be able to motor up and down the pitch all game, covering a huge amount of ground and doing attacking and defensive duties in equal measure. I don't see that in him, just a neat footballer who can play in tight spaces.

Always felt it weird that he's considered as a left back. Totally unsuited to it. Could imagine him better playing centre mid in a possession-based side. Not sure he could do it in a league like the Championship though.

I don't doubt your recollections, but Spider was a superb and reliable left back from a defensive point of view, and his popularity was justified. I doubt if he ever scored a goal though (I can't recall one) and I imagine he had very few assists. Those stats probably weren't gathered in those days.

Not right wing, but right side of a flexible front three isn't so crazy IMO. Seem to remember him marauding down that side a few times last season, when fed with the right type of balls. Wide role probably suits Haji better though.
