how is it clearly preferable to live in China? There is no way of measuring that. I would certainly prefer to live here even though I've never visited China but I wouldn't get anywhere near to putting that down to cultural superiority.

i never said it was. What I didn't agree with is that we are culturally superior, and I think that is a racist statement. On animal rights and food hygiene, I think they can learn from us even though we are far from perfect.

I enjoy Behind the bastards podcast and they've just released a load of new episodes in the last month. Basically they tell tell the story behind a horrible bastard but it's quite funny.

I do. But the thread is about the current crisis, so how our government responds is always going to revive more focus than other governments. I made that point in response to Tom who mentioned how much our government gets slated on this thread. But as the second biggest economy in the world...

but it's unreasonable to expect us to scrutinise all foreign governments who perform worse than out own, at the end of the day, our main concern is how things are been handled here.

the thing is our government is the one we elected and the one who are supposed to serve us so they're always going to get more scrutiny than anyone else no matter what the merits of each governments performance.

It probably seems worse to us because we keep dogs as domestic pets but I think it's the treatment more than anything. Like I said, we're not squeaky clean but there are some particularly barbaric practices in China.

we have been discussing animal welfare and hygiene. I would say yes, we are ahead of the Chinese in that respect and I don't agree with the way they treat animals, even though it's fair to say we're not squeaky clean ourselves. I would not extend that to our culture is better.
