I still can't get my head around it, nor the FIA's justification of it for that matter. I don't remember exactly when the lapped cars may overtake rule came back in, but I can't recall a single situation in recent history where one part of the rule overrode another. To the best of my knowledge...

Honestly, I don't see it. I'm pretty sure the only time that's an issue is if you overtake and keep the position before crossing the start line to restart. Max was behind at that point. Technically you're meant to stay on the racing line behind the leading car, but I don't think I've ever seen...

With regards to overtaking under SC, I've always understood that as long as you were behind at the start line, you were OK.

I think the bit of it that does have to happen is the "following lap" bit. That's not so open to interpretation, and in this case would have meant the race should have ended under the SC. Will anything come of it in terms of the title? Probably not. Not least because the FIA won't want to admit...

And Mercedes are protesting on this basis.
