Swapping furlough for an UBI would be a good move.

Surely if we can reduce the chance of transmission by allowing people to stay at home (or work from home if viable) in turn it should reduce the risk to those ‘key workers’ that are in places of work. It doesn’t seem to be such a bad idea does it? Admittedly far from perfect.

What point are you actually trying to make? People have a risk to their livelihood due to things completely out of their control, is it so beyond the state to look after them?

Why don’t you cut out the foreplay and just tell them to eat cake....

That rubbish. Let’s hope someone sees sense and extends the furlough scheme if that will give you more security job wise.

Not trying to point score here, but you should be able to feel safe in terms of your health and also your job security. One should not be compromised for the other. I hope it all is OK for you.

    What the fuck

I don’t disagree with this, where I feel uncomfortable is where ‘free speech’ is utilised to degrade, dehumanise and persecute people.

    What the fuck

Of course people should have the platform to debate ideas across a variety of views and political beliefs, that doesn’t mean that a) a cancel culture is taking over and b) that it should give free rein to people with some pretty horrific views. There is still enough distinction between...

It would - he would have just retweeted and commented on his own original tweet like he was some kind of mystic.

    What the fuck

Not true at all. The only people claiming they represent the left are the people on the other side of the political spectrum who like to categorise in this way because they lack the intellectual capacity to understand why people might speak out. Cancel culture is a myth pedalled by right wing...

It makes sense now about the impact of the practical nature of what you teach. And of course there is far less scope to adjust curriculum in regards to what you have to show them.

Yes I agree - the government didn’t plan for that when they had 6 months to put a system in place. Instead they gave £5m to Oak to bang out some voiced over PPT’s. It’s not like HMI/OFSTED/DFE did anything useful during the time when we had to sort out CAG’s. Another frustrating example of...

Their can be no substitute for face to face teaching, I’m not even going to begin to question that, but the safety aspect goes beyond just the children. It’s their at risk family members, their vulnerable or at risk teachers or their at risk family members, even their vulnerable or at risk...

It’s not really irrelevant though is it. It’s been exacerbated since the 2010 coalition pretended that we ‘were all in it together’ as they crucified the poorest for austerity.

    Coronavirus Thread (Off Topic, Politics)

The poorest kids have been losing out in education for as long as I can remember. Funding stripped, rising class numbers, removal of support networks in and around education and social work structures to name a handful of the myriad of problems. Now everyone that turned a blind eye to the...

There is of course the Oak National Academy stuff that is out there, that has been funded and paid to provide remote learning resources for the whole of this academic year. Of course though, a quick dig into how it was put together and you soon find out that it was another no-tender deal with...

    US presidential Election 2020

I agree that the Dems have not picked the right guy for this fight. Biden should really get over the line given the damage Trump has done over the last 4 years but I wouldn’t bet on the outcome at all.

Work life balance has been one of the major reasons for teachers leaving the profession. Some schools and heads get it, some really do not. I know I can’t teach from home effectively and we need to be in school for as long as it remains safe to do so, but the lockdown has shown us that we don’t...
