    Over night stays

The costs, whilst great to you or I, aren't actually that great to a club and despite football generally 'having a lot of money', they do push back on costs as much as they can and know exactly what they should be paying for. There's a number of ways you could look at the cost though...if a...

I know Norwich have a few flights due to their location, Bournemouth also. And you're right, we rarely do it, even compared to other L1 teams. To be fair, it's not as though it's worked against us/for other teams. And a lot depends on the 1st team managers preferences. Most would want to be...

That's more the exception than the rule I'd say though LS. I've seen an increase in rail travel. With the same thing though...the team coach picks them up at their arrival point and transports them to the hotel. And it's mainly Prem teams only who would do this...I guess the likes of Plymouth...

Do we not get a cut of away revenue?

Fair comment Rupert. I guess that the more we get through the doors, the less impact overnight stays would have on the playing budget if the money is coming from that pot of cash. I've booked tickets to my first game of the season, away at Swindon. Every little helps and all that!

I know that we don't but if we did, simple maths would say at £2k an average...actually, scrap that, probably £1.5k average for an average L1 team, then over 23 away games, you're looking at just under £35k per season. But then you have to factor in any transport costs as well as away ties in...

£2k would be average. If you've got a midweek evening game, a team might coach/train to a hotel for lunchtime, then have rooms on a day-let basis with a pre-match meal, in which case it'll be cheaper (as day lets are cheaper than overnights.

I look after 88 of the 92 clubs and a colleague looks after the other 4 (as he has contacts at those). About 85% of clubs book through 3rd party agents whom I also manage but of those I look after direct, 4 of them are top PL clubs. Keeps me out of trouble!

Oh right, I get ya. You'd be surprised but some chain hotels can go that low at weekends. I think the lowest I've seen is probably £80 BB (£90 if it's a twin) plus meal requirements on top. Off course in London, you'd double that or even triple it in some of our properties.

Teams don't stay at B&Bs NW....they normally stayed in branded hotels, boutique hotels or good quality independent hotels. Places like Blackpool though, there can be an issue around some groups. You also have weddings in hotels every weekend and then probably more of an issue, you have Xmas...

So, this is my line of work as I deal with accommodation requirements of professional sports teams globally although mainly with the 92 league clubs. An average L1 overnight stay with pre-match meal would probably come in around £2k depending on if the teams twin up in the rooms. We are one of...

    Michael O'Neill

Yeah, I guess so. The gap between the international teams is not the same as it was 20/30 years ago. The so called minnows are closer to the big boys in terms of ability nowadays. I'm not saying we could be world beaters but you're right, nations like NI are making more of a fist of these...

Yeah, you could also point to Denmark in 1992 who only came in after the then Yugoslavia were booted out. I know what you're saying...over 30 years of being a Cov and NI fan though Otis has always told me to be totally be pessimistic then results like last night are all the more satisfying.

    Swindon Away Tickets

It was indeed. Anyone remember the game against them when they were in the top flight? We lost 3-1 to a Jan Aage Fjortoft hat-trick, Julian Darby with our response. I met Phil Neal afterwards who seemed non-fussed about the defeat. Then I met Killer in the bar afterwards as he was on their...

    Michael O'Neill

Fair comment...same way I could only name 2 players in the Welsh side and maybe a couple in the Scottish. O'Neill seems to have installed some belief in the team. We're likely to get battered in France but just to be there will be amazing. We can continue to dream of results such as vs Spain...

Nice to see a WAG doing her bit to discourage the 'money-grabbing cow' persona that a lot of them have.
