Conor Chaplin - Signing Confirmed (Finally!)

Portsmouth are playing a dangerous game here. £400k for a player who doesn’t start and is out of contract at the end of this year is a very fair deal. If the player doesn’t get first team football, by January his value will half. It also seem Portsmouth are dependent on any fee for a replacement...

    Robins' comments

Height isn’t the be all and end all, there’s a host of world class defenders under 6”. It’s about being able to outjump and outmuscle your opposite man. Davies is our most aggressive player by a distance in the way he attacks the ball from set pieces and so on.

Davies is a unit, McDonald was bullied by bigger strikers. The best examples being v Cambridge and Luton.

    Ponticelli

Ponticelli wasn’t even at an acedmy at 18, Chaplin has made 100+ appearances... Age is just a number, experience is more important.

We also need to stop playing out wide. He doesn’t appear to have any outstanding attributes for that role. He needs a chance to play upfront.

Conor Chaplin - Signing Confirmed (Finally!)

We signed JCH after our FA Cup run got a bit more money into the coffers to make that deal. If rumours are to be believed, we structured the JCH deal so it’d come under this season’s FFP as opposed to last season’s. So no, Biamou’s wages wouldn’t have made up 300k for Collins. That’s a...

Conor Chaplin - Signing Confirmed (Finally!)

The budget was pushed to the limit signing 12 or so free agents, where was the money coming from for a £300k striker? If we signed Collins, it would’ve been unlikely we could’ve also signed McNulty and probably Andreu too. The way you’re talking about not signing Collins is as if we live in a...

Conor Chaplin - Signing Confirmed (Finally!)

Fair enough on the James Collins stats. In retrospect, why would signing Collins have ‘meant business?’ He cost (about) £300k and McNulty scored more goals and in more games than Collins. Assuming we signed him, 300k is a lot out of the budget which meant we would’ve had less budget to play with...

Conor Chaplin - Signing Confirmed (Finally!)

Collins signed for £200-300k last season IIRC. He’s not worth a penny more than that for him and it’s highly doubtful Luton would sell him for anything less than about £300-500k and his record in L1 hasn’t been anything to rave about, correct me if I’m wrong. As for Stockley, he’s also wanted...

Conor Chaplin - Signing Confirmed (Finally!)

Robins’ first choice replacement for McNulty is Chaplin, where money is not the problem, but rather dependent on Portsmouth find a replacement. So he does have the money to replace him... By ‘replace him effectively’, people like yourself think buying an Eisa, Marquis or Doidge who will all...

Conor Chaplin - Signing Confirmed (Finally!)

Maddison money will presumably go on ensuring we breakeven/make a profit. It seems a lot of people have forgotten we’re in millions of debt. 30% of £1.2m is £400k which is what we’re rumoured to be spending on Chaplin. In the case of this transfer, money isn’t the problem, Portsmouth aren’t...

By contrast, didn’t we have a ‘good’ preseason the year we got relegated? I remember having this chat with a good friend of mine. Either way, the results in preseason are not important. It’s about match fitness, trying new things and getting new signings integrated into the system and team.

Conor Chaplin - Signing Confirmed (Finally!)

‘Millions’ is plural, so even if he has the full £1.2m from the McNulty sale, he still wouldn’t have ‘millions’ to spend. We know he has at least £400-450k from the sale for Chaplin and if he wants to sign two further players, there’s a possibility he’ll go out and sign someone else on a fee...

    Momentum and optimism... gone?

McNulty was not guaranteed to have another storming season. There are players who have scored 20+ goals who haven’t been able to make the step up to L1. We wouldn’t be able to get away with relying on him to the extent we did last season in L1. It’s a big loss, but the fee we got for him was...

    Team v Scunthorpe

There are three likely setups with the personnel we have at our disposal right now, 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-2. At this moment, we're probably going to stick to 5-3-2 or 4-4-2 because Jones is injured and we don't have that many wingers and strikers right now (this could change). As for lineups...

    Momentum and optimism... gone?

You’d think the season had already started and transfer window closed judging by the apocalyptic reaction of some people. We got a good deal for McNulty, every footballer has a price, they met that price and we had a player who wanted to go. It would be a lot easier for Robins to just go out...

    Transfer Rumours

Stockley would be a very good signing and if we were to also sign Chaplin it would make for a dangerous duo.
  19. Mucca Mad Boys

Conor Chaplin - Signing Confirmed (Finally!)

Shipley, Bayliss and Jones all got 6 goals in half a season, for just one of them to get 10 goals isn’t so far fetched. Will Bayliss stay? The indication is yes. All them are young, improving players. As for Andreu, he’s scored 2 in preseason already so it looks like he’s making a good comeback...

Conor Chaplin - Signing Confirmed (Finally!)

You need a team that has goals all over the park. A weakness of ours last season was our over-reliance on McNulty. It was only until Shipley, Bayliss and (to an extent) Biamou started scoring that we started to score a lot of goals. We also need a lot more goals from set-pieces next season too...
