Hamer and Walsh are both good players. No doubt that if there’s an opportunity to sign him, we would make a move for Walsh - which is v unlikely. It does look like Hamer will be a more than suitable replacement for Walsh, so good job recruitment!

He knew he botched the chance COH set him up with. His goal was good so I’m not going to complain too much! Tyler Walker and Gooden linked up quite well in the end. Our midfield just ran out of legs and we lost our two most influential midfield players on the day.

We were good at defending set-pieces last season. If we continue to concede soft goals from set-pieces, we’ll review it down the line. Don’t get me wrong, I am surprised we didn’t pick up that they had a centre back, and probably one of their best headers at the far post.

They may have to change zonal marking if it becomes a problem, but our set piece defending wasn’t an issue last season. There’s a reason zonal marking is popular - we just didn’t execute on that set play.

You see Hyam pinch in to deal with the perceived threat of the play in the middle, only for the ball to sail over and hit Kalas, who Shipley was left to deal with. Shipley wasn’t in a position to deal with the threat at all. It’s a team failure - solely blaming Shipley isn’t fair.

Overall, a loss is harsh on us. But, if you give away a poor goal from kickoff and a soft corner kick, you get what you deserve in this league. Some positives to take from the game, so I’m not concerned based on this first performance.
