To me the main issue seems to be that the government are welded to American libertarian ideology. They cannot bear the thought of handing out money. Yet the risk of not doing so will be long term damage to every sector which will reduce tax revenue for years. There is this constant false choice...

Think you’ve summed up one of the main issues here with these two points. The effectiveness of every measure is drastically reduced by trying to keep a donor/influential sector happy. At some point somebody has to take a hit or every part of the economy damaged while killing more of the public...

Open University does all of this digitally. Admittedly, normal uni couldn’t not be expected to achieve that over the summer but they could go some way to replicating it and postpone some aspects of learning. The courses that really require regular interaction could be on site while and be...

The frustrating thing about this is uni education is by far the easiest to move online. Fewer contact hours, motivated students, more resources. Decision to send them back feels largely based on keeping accommodation providers happy.

A fair point when talking about the general public. I was thinking more about the commentators pushing the idea of lockdown being economically damaging and the herd immunity strategy who tend to be shills for libertarian think tanks. More of an issue in America though, in fairness.

The public support stricter measures according to latest polling. It’s a loud, well funded minority talking about fewer restrictions and shielding the elderly only. The other issue is you can’t have a balancing act between these two completely different strategies. Trying to do so is partly...

Most people called that out as political bulls shit due to a lack of PPE at the time. The scientists never said masks don’t work, they said they were of limited effectiveness. It was the conspiracy nuts and Trump who said they don’t work.

It’s quite incredible how we can’t lockdown to save lives because we need to save the economy yet a no deal brexit that will certainly damage the economy and could cost lives is worth it. I think that’s called double think. We have learnt nothing from the first wave or the actions of other...
