    USSR invades Ukraine.

Apparently in polling in Russia on the run up to this only 8% of Russians support military action by the Russian army in Ukraine and only 9% support the separatists in Ukraine. Putin might have misread the room catastrophically on this. Be interesting to see if the protests in Russia increase...

Saw it. If I got the gist of it he was saying that unlike in the Cold War the problem is that there’s been no longer term joined up thinking between administrations in numerous western countries and also no joined up thinking between the western countries so there’s been no sustained unilateral...

100% agree. It’s time to turn the sanction amp up to 11. I’m not sure what else Putin needs to do to get to that point. Unexplained wealth orders on all 2500 odd golden visa Russians, the innocent ones will welcome the opportunity to clear their name but in reality you don’t garner enough wealth...

A good point. They still have a draft in Russia for all men. They have to do at least 12 months in the army before they’re 28. Many of these soldiers will be there under obligation not choice.

    USSR invades Ukraine.

I heard a report earlier (I think someone else mentioned it on here earlier) that the Russian soldiers that had been dropped into the airport were bemused as they were fighting Ukrainian soldiers when they were led to believe that they’d be fighting a multinational NATO army.

The unexplained wealth orders to the sanctions is a bit locking the gate after the horse has bolted. We’ve allowed over 2500 Russians have £2M golden visas and if what James Cleverly said last night on Peston that was with little to zero due diligence. Although admittedly that could be James...

You’re missing the point. Brexit is nothing to do with the invasion but Russia is everything to do with Brexit. The people who sold it to the UK are awash with Russian money, pro Russian opinions and many of the more prominent members of the campaign from Martin Daubney to your avatar have done...

Pretty much my thoughts. Suppressing free speech, protest (breaking Covid rules apparently), locking away opposition politicians etc USA sign of weakness not strength. Maybe just maybe these are the actions of a desperate man who is loosing his grip.

    USSR invades Ukraine.

I’m just thinking back to the Falklands war when a frightened weak dictatorship invaded it in an attempt to look strong which was actually a sign of weakness and led to it’s downfall. Is it too much to hope that this will go the same way for Putin?

A sizeable protest in St Petersburg tonight, Putins home city. Maybe this isn’t going the way he planned in Russia. Also some talk that Ukrainian soldiers have taken back the airport and done enough damage to the runway to stop planes landing on it. Big stumbling block for Putin if true.
