He's not really though, he's someone with a job who's doing what his employers ask as the vast majority of people do.

Erring on the side of optimism, I'd like to believe he has professional pride so that the chance to play football outweighed any potential lazy cash-in he could have stuck with. At 29 he's got to be near his last contract as a player.
