    We’re a mid table squad with a mid table budget. It rarely deviates far in terms of cash availability and league position. The odd outlier but in general it works that way. You have to keep pulling recruitment rabbits out of hats to buck the trend. Defensively we’ve done the opposite.

    The facts don’t bear this out though. The Pompey capitulation was awful. But we haven’t buckled under pressure or adversity. We’ve taken a lot of points from positions where we are behind. It’s a far more basic problem for us - we’re just shit defensively.

    Pointless arguing about what our worst performance has been. The top and bottom of it is Robins was superb for us but had reached the end of his road. Lampard is in situ but it can’t be argued this is his team. So comparisons should only be made 3-4 transfer windows in.
