The problem with tax is it's a dirty word that the rich have spent a long time convincing people is a bad thing. It needs a rebrand. It's a public dividend.

There's nothing to stop there being a LEL for it. If you set it at the rate of the state pension everyone recieving that would be exempt. Then it gets paid on private pensions.

I'm quoting percentage because that's what the definition of progressive/regressive taxes are. A progressive tax is one where the percentage paid progessively increases the more you earn. A regressive tax is one where the percentage contributed regresses the more you earn.

    Coronavirus Thread (Off Topic, Politics)

So the govt is actively suggesting loads of people are dying on thier watch from Covid that actually aren't to make people stay at home and shut things? Yep, I can see how that would increase their popularity and make them look good.

Well, the argument is they're still using the services. And as more and more people get older the system has more and more people to care for with less and less people contributing. They still pay income tax. When it was started the amount you contributed paid for those now and then future...

Claiming it's progressive because there's a LEL under which people don't contribute is a bit of a stretch. Once you start contributing the percentage you pay goes down the more you earn. That makes it regressive.

You were the one that equated higher earnings as people 'bettering themselves'.

You practically accused the government of making up the death statistics as an excuse to bring lockdowns back

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

No it isn't. It's actually a regressive tax because above a certain level the percentage contributed goes down

Hence a wealth tax amongst other things... 'Better' themselves. So I guess all nurses should fuck off their job and do something that earns more so they can 'better' themsleves. Perhaps they could sell expensive tat to trendy people? Or become an influencer? Richer does not mean better, If...

    Coronavirus Thread (Off Topic, Politics)

Not sure why you're so obsessed with thinking this government wants lockdowns. They've consistently left the decision until way too late in order to try and keep things open until the situation has got so bad it's unavoidable. Their donors and mates want things open so they can make more...

Just because income tax increases doesn't mean there should be a let-off from NI. That's the whole point of the system. Those more able to, pay. What about the large amounts of income the rich have access to which aren't affected by income tax, like dividends, rental income, investments. A lot...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

That's the attitude of a cap-doffer. The rich have always got away with it so why even bother trying. We're all getting butt-fucked by them. But I sure as hell am not going to hand them the lube.

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

The ceiling on it is pretty low so once you earn over a certain amount you don't pay any more. So as you say those not earning pay nothing. Those earning loads pay a lot less proportionately than those that don't. So the biggest burden is on those middle income workers. You missed out a word...

It's not about 'savings'. Loads of people want savings but don't have enough to do so. Look at the fortunes of the rich during the pandemic compared to everyone else. They've made a fortune when supposedly the world is being crippled economically by a pandemic. How did they make that much money...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

Point is why pick something that is more onerous on those less well-off - the same people who have suffered the most through loss of earnings etc during the pandemic? The rich have been raking it in, but they get off quite nicely from this. Out of all the solutions this was one of the worst in...

That about sums it up. As soon as Johnson started talking about how he'd broken a manifesto pledge but no-one could foresee a pandemic I thought "The social care crisis didn't suddenly appear because of the pandemic. It's been there for more than a decade." Yet there'll still be plenty who'll...
