    Coronavirus Thread (Off Topic, Politics)

The amount of times somebody has told me “they couldn’t have seen this coming” @#%*! 1) There have been several readiness exercises for pandemics, even specifically for a novel coronavirus. 2) A pandemic is inevitable given a long enough duration of time. 3) The last 2 decades we’ve had...

At least 11 countries have reimposed restrictions amid fears of coronavirus second wave — The Telegraph Examples of cases rising again and measures being reintroduced in 11 countries. A second peak is a real worry and I think inevitable in the U.K. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If I'm understanding this correctly the author may have misinterpreted what this means. The assumption was always that the majority of people wouldn't be affected or would only have very mild symptoms. It was one of the reasons why we were so relaxed about it early on. So, I think it makes no...

I don’t agree with the view off many that they intentionally went for herd immunity while pretending otherwise. I think their minds were genuinely changed when the study came out predicting 500k deaths. I think our performance is down to two things: 1) Johnson and Cummings are heavily...

Agree. Looking at the data from around the world the best economic play was an earlier, harder lockdown. As I highlighted this morning we’re looking at more deaths and more disruption.

Personally I think we’re in big trouble now. We can’t stay in lockdown any longer as too many businesses are struggling but we haven’t got cases low enough to come out of lockdown without a second spike. If a second spike occurs will we be able to afford to go into lockdown again? Test and trace...

I'd be interested to know what was said but it isn't on the BBC summary page. Is there a full transcript put up of these?

    George Floyd

Exactly, people do get wound up about those things too! Like I said, I used to have some sympathy for it and have been caught up in that line of thinking before. I’ve certainly got friends who think like that “but what about x issue”. At some point as white people, or men, or whatever group...

    George Floyd

I used to have sympathy for the “all lives matter” argument but you know what? Maybe we should spend less time complaining that the racism debate isn’t framed in the manner that is most palatable to white people and do more to eradicate racism.

    George Floyd

Exactly. He’s going to end up inciting a civil war because the polls look bad for him. The sad thing is people will start droning on about “the radical left” and he may actually benefit. At the moment I think he’s being shown up for the massive dickhead he is but not sure how long that will last.

I don’t disagree but what point are you trying to make? That he can’t tarnish Gove or boost the others because we are in a post truth era of politics?

It’s a good point. Initially we saw support for the government surge, effect of a crisis, but as the public see the way it’s been handled it’s dropping. Still, long way until an election. A change in leader, some bad publicity of labour, memories of the pandemic fade and it wouldn’t surprise me...

The Gove stuff is true but I don’t think it would keep him on. Plenty of ways he could tarnish Gove or boost Raab or Sunak.
