I think what I find quite baffling is how Shipley was getting chosen over Jones despite poor performances at AM. Jones has not done terribly on his few appearances this season and I'm sure he would have put more of a shift in. If MR supposedly picks on merit, I just don't see how Shipley fits...

Doesn't necessarily making him good at teaching others. Sometimes just having a natural ability or aptitude at something makes it harder to teach other people, because they don't have that same inherent skill as you and you don't know why it is they don't have it.
