Yes certainly I did that and I would assume that this happened in most schools. I did some work with our English department as their initial predictions were so out of kilter with their past performance and KS2 prior data that we had to adjust them The government guidance at the time was...

Maybe until we discover that we aren’t alone in the Universe we’ll carry on in the same manner.

I’d be intrigued to see how advanced civilisations like this and the Greeks really were. I’d wager it’s far more than we realise.

They were ranked within each grade, but schools weren’t told that a certain amount had to be of each grade. The HOD and SLT may then have been adjusted so the final submission was centre assessment not teacher assessment technically.

My school has about 40% EAL but I don’t think we do enough of it. However as the DFE don’t value ‘home language’ exams as they are only allowed to be in bucket 3 and can’t count in the EBACC schools decide it isn’t in the schools interest (never mind it being good for the kid)

Parents/students have to go through a subject access request if they want to challenge a grade we’ve given them. To be fair your HOD should be the one to deal with this as they would have signed off your grades so it’s on them now.

This is a side effect of this change. It will create some problems - significantly less than before but I’m sure your rationale will have been spot on.

This is why I think certain schools may have had advance knowledge of how this would work.

I read this particular story and it’s utterly disgraceful! Her predicted grade was C but she was bottom of the ranking. This just demonstrates about the lacking of basic competency here - if that’s gone through any kind of QA post algorithm it gets corrected.

They wheeled out a guy from Ofqual to do the announcement/apology. Doesn’t even have the balls to do it himself.

No it’s a home language exam - relatively common these days.

He wouldn’t understand the algorithm anyway. He set what he wanted at the start (similar results, independent schools not to be disadvantaged) and expected it to be done.

It would be interesting to find out where these were. Did some schools get wind of the fact the algorithm wouldn’t be applied to small cohorts? If they did then this would explain how the bigger cohorts got graded down so substantially to fit in the normal distribution of grades.

When I did ours for Maths I believed that OFSTED would want to come and see justification for what we awarded. I would actually welcome this especially if we were to end up having to do something similar for the next cohort.

What should have happened is that Ofqual/OFSTED/HMI should have been in schools ratifying and cross analysing these submissions months ago. A lot of schools have done a huge amount of quality assurance on these grades to make them as fair as possible. No doubt some schools will have taken...

I really hate the patriotism argument in general - right wing nutters love to exploit that narrative to do and say some pretty horrible things.

I agree - he failed to come out fighting on the AS issue which was hugely inflated so it could be used as political capital, and allowed a narrative to take hold - then compounded by the Brexit intransigence.
