I think the easiest way to think of a transfer deal is to think about when you are buying / selling your house. Often for the deal to work you need various parts of the chain to be in place at the same time. It doesn’t matter if your part is agreed if further down the chain the seller loses...

Hardly 4D chess is it. Clubs are constantly talking to multiple players for the same position just in case they can’t land their primary target. This then gets leaked by one side or another to strengthen their hand in the negotiation. It’s pretty route one really.
