Match Thread Coventry City - Portsmouth FC Match Thread - Wednesday 9th Apr

What are you on about? At the time he was brought in, Wright was the first name on the team sheet at LW. Hence why it was a strange buy. EMC's strongest position is LW and we already had a player there who unless sold was never going to be replaced. He's also looked very uncomfortable when...

Match Thread Coventry City - Portsmouth FC Match Thread - Wednesday 9th Apr

I think it's more that this is where Wright is very much exposed as a 9. He's nowhere near physical enough and looks very uncomfortable playing with his back to goal, especially when defenders are tight on him. Which they were pretty much all game until he went off.

If we are to get into the POs and there's far more at stake his mentality does worry me though. He's not going to get the same luxury against better teams.

Funnily enough that will happen when the first choice LW has been out for nearly 4 months....

I get the need for squad depth put spending £4m on a backup LW is a pretty bizarre use of budget.

In all fairness he only had to face one shot, and it was a tame one. Although they broke well, particularly in the first half, Portsmouth's end product was pretty toothless for the most part. Distribution was very good from him throughout though.

    Sheaf and Grimes

What he did well was put a bit more control back in the midfield by picking up second balls. Up until that point we were getting bullied and losing the physical battle.

    Sheaf and Grimes

It's also to alleviate pressure on the CBs to have to pass the ball out. One of the biggest issues earlier in the team was us giving the ball away in our own half which obviously made us vulnerable, our back line were the biggest culprits.

    Pompey player ratings

Thomas was all over the place first half. Got caught on a few occasions but was bailed out by players around him. Settled more in the second half though.

    Viktor Moving on

Their playing style isn't all that dissimilar than Sporting's was under Amorim, where Gyokeres was probably at his best compared to under the new chap where he isn't scoring as many goals from open play. Granted they might look at someone younger like Sesko but it boils down to who's available...

So you're saying that signing Florian Wirtz is off the table?

    Loans (again)

Bollocking was probably a bit strong. Reading between the lines of what Dean Austin has said previously on the club's stance on loans though, when he referenced the Ayari situation specifically, I suspect Brighton weren't particularly happy as the club would've likely given assurances about his...

    Leicester

Their biggest issue is last time they had a number of saleable assets they could use as collateral to buy their way back up to the PL. This time around I genuinely can't think of one player that would generate a decent fee.

The mistake fans make is they think football clubs are like any other business when they're not.

    Summer Transfer Window

It's a lot harder for clubs to go completely bust nowadays. Fit and proper owners test, while incredibly basic, do block out a lot of the nutcases - if you want to see a classic case of why it works see the Chris Kirchner Derby County saga. Failed Derby County bidder Chris Kirchner jailed for...

    Summer Transfer Window

I think that's right. Achieving financial sustainability is akin to finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow scenario. It's not within reach, and certainly not if you want to get anywhere in the sport.

Eccles Injured for rest of the season

No. Not allowed unless it's a season long loan and the club takes up the option to recall in Jan.

Eccles Injured for rest of the season

See above. Realised it was Boosh who posted a pic so probably is just a snap of his mate Craig Danny being too pissed to remember to wear a matching pair of shoes again.

Eccles Injured for rest of the season

Well I presume it's his ankle unless a WUM posted a random pic on the Rudoni injury thread.

Eccles Injured for rest of the season

That wasn't a guarantee, it was an all being well scenario. Plus his ankle seems to be twice the size of the other one to complicate matters.
