Possible factor is they didn't see much real pace due to county wickets and it was often pace that undid them in Tests. Both frequent targets for short-pitched bowling.

What's been interesting last 2 days is how Sky have examined (and proven) where fielding & bowling problems have been. Slip corden gaps, Anderson & Broad seem to have forgotten what bowling brought them success. The piece on Anderson's bowling lengths seemed obvious & simple but the actual data...

Had forgotten he was batting coach. There was a player with natural ability but often questionable temperament. Often got a start but poor conversion rate

Buttler batted exactly how a no.7 should and for once had something of a platform to build from. Scored 80 of the 150ish last 5 wickets put on. Built sensibly with the better batsmen and took control with the tail. Now that's Test match batting.

Graham Thorpe: Producing Test batsmen is becoming tougher at least they are looking at the roots of the problem. But anyone care to take a bet that there's an overpaid sports psychologist involved with the Test side who obviously isn't earning their money

Decent cricket mainly. Woakes & Malan did get good balls. Love Broad bitching. Far too inconsistent - awful lot of 3-4 wicket matches in last 20 odd Tests. Hard to believe he was ranked no. 1 in 2016. Still someone with surprisingly few 5w hauls for an opening bowler. Pleased for Bess but it...

so let's be honest a decent chance the likes of Bairstow, Buttler, Broad, Malan and a few others will probably see a maximum of 1 4-day game before the India series. That's just outstanding planning & management!!!

no Test cricket until August?? Hadn't realized - just ridiculous. So Div 1 sides have about 3 4 day games between now and India series and rest is one day cricket. Just a nonsense.

Jeez he's frustrating. Bowling beautifully. When's he's on it he is some bowler. Don't know whether it's rhythm or he just needs to get in the mood - a real chalk and cheese player.

so wood out for Woakes. Hope it's a bowling decision and not lengthening the tail. Good luck Sam Curran

    DKE's

Comes down to them not quite being at the level Robins thinks L1 requires. Can't question their commitment or loyalty when they've been involved. Let's remember the arguments some of have put on here for the next time a "more successful" academy graduate moves up the leagues to improve their...

    Ccfc transfer rumours

Have to be practical if can only keep hold of one has to be McNulty just for the short-term benefits. Love Bayliss but still very much a work in progress. If he goes he's going into someone's U23 side.

    Sympathy for Shrewsbury & Exeter.

system was changed because it was when they were shrinking PL to 20 clubs. also now with significant financial imbalances between divisions the club 1 place above relegation spots would probably have a significant advantage in terms of investment in players/wages etc.

So who’s not going to Wembley tomorrow?

Sat on a bar terrace overlooking the Danube. Beautiful summer evening. quietly grinning like an idiot. Family think it's because I'm enjoying a birthday dinner. They've learnt nothing over last 20 years. :)

So who’s not going to Wembley tomorrow?

Me. Just finished in court in Budapest and racing across the river to get to Beckett's (irish pub) and meeting up with another couple of exiled Sky Blues and some local converts. Bloody hot here so may try and move to one of the sports bars with a terrace bigscreen instead. Youngest's birthday...

Root has held his form with the bat as captain but that's it. Viable alternatives aren't there in current side unless you bring in an outsider that has happened in the past but with little success. There is a collective spirit but it just seems to be a "matey" one rather than a professional team...

Problem is I think the ECB etc. are now encouraging/allowing these players to have max. exposure to IPL to compete at a higher 20/20 level. Prioritising 20/20 team over Test side. Allowing players just to opt for white ball cricket another example.
