Absolute loads of older people don't and have never owned a dishwasher. When they bought the first video recorders I'm sure they sat down with a pen and paper and did the whole money out/in before they bought one. Same with their TV because a lot of people rented in the 50s and 60s before they...

Great stuff. Its just bloody difficult and somewhere along the line everyone has to work their bollocks off, go without holidays abroad and takeaways three days a week . I've got 20 years and more on you but I remember my 30s and early 40s being a time of long hours and cutting back...

Good post . An 80k mortgage would have bought a good property in the 1980s in the Coventry area, especially with a deposit on top.

Absolutely agree. I remember 16% . Worked 16 hour weekends for about a year on top of the other 5 days and it was difficult. Nowadays you'd be getting a dominoes delivered once a week, buying half a dozen netflix films and your carpets would remain threadbare. .....and you'd be telling...

I wonder what percentage of those who rent actually do not want a mortgage and are quite happy to rent. I suppose back in my dad's day everyone wanted to buy. Renting was far less common than it is now. With less jobs for life and lower security there must be a fair number who actually prefer...

What's the population in the UK now compared with 1970 I wonder ? I'm assuming availability of property has not kept pace with population growth. I've always assumed that but never really checked.

You mentioned "credit" which usually refers to non mortgage loans. Credit may be more difficult to come by since 2008, but it was never that easy to come by up until the end of the 1980s.

Not mortgages. Most people had a mortgage.

What's your point ? Houses were stillexpensive in the 1960s . Everyone had a mortgage.

How readily available were loans in the 1960-80s compared to now ?

Wow. Weren't houses cheap in the 1960s and even the 1970s. I could buy a whole street on today's salary of £20,000 a year. Carpets 2 shillings a square yard an' all.

Nice those lace cap types. Hydrangeas easy to take cuttings as well, bearing in mind they're not that cheap.

If you want to go round saying aluminum and math then that's fine. If you want to say dyper, sidewalk , for God sakes etc that's fine too. If you want to say muffler and hood that's great But do you really want to ? For God sakes no. Period.
