I could believe it the other way round

If I am correct, MA's bid (£17M) was already known when DK put in his offer of £25M. Why so much higher, other than to provide a tangibly better return if MA's bid was rejected? Also the lateness of the bid from DK and the lack of any proper preparation would seem strange in any other scenario.
