    Israel - Palestinian Conflict

If you don't care then why are you responding? Why was it posted in the first place? Of course people care what he thinks, and given it relates to the conflict it seems fair game for the thread. Feel free to ignore it if choose, but it's not your or my place to be telling people they can't...

    Israel - Palestinian Conflict

Right.... what Starmer says on this isn't important. So, is it important what he says on anything else or not, because I'm not quite clear now whether we should listen to him or not? Perhaps you and David could separate out his "important" statements that we should listen to, from the ones...

    Israel - Palestinian Conflict

Hmm. I think discussing what our politicians are saying about the situation is fair enough, and politely, I don't think it's down to you to decide to shut down the debate. If you don't want to take part, fair enough - other threads are available.

    Israel - Palestinian Conflict

He's the leader of the Labour party and probably our next Prime Minister. I think what he says on this issue is pretty important. It gives a fair indication of how his government will behave. If you're interested in politics, on who to vote for, and on where the UK will stand on the world...

    Israel - Palestinian Conflict

I'm not sure if he really believes it, or if he's just saying it because he's terrified of how the right wing press will play it if he dares to criticise Israel. This is the problem with having a leader who is so scared of the Daily Mail that he'll say anything to try to keep them onside.

    SHOOT

Me too. I was hoping for a discussion on what model of Cortina Billy Bremner drove, and a heated exchange regarding "You are the Ref". 😁

Traditionally Panama, isn't it, quite pretty too... The way this is going though, I'm flying a white flag personally, and getting the fuck out of here...

    Israel - Palestinian Conflict

There are almost a million children in the Gaza strip. They're innocent too, unless simply being born Palestinian is a crime. Many of those children will die in the next few days directly because of Israel's actions. There won't be as many photos, but the deaths will be horrific nonetheless...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

The positive cost benefit of HS2 is *exactly* where it all falls down. That's precisely where I came in. Have you read the any of the dissenting opinions. This one is well researched and clearly stated, and from someone with access to the data and no axe to grind... It's a little odd how you...

    Israel - Palestinian Conflict

It's horrific from both sides. Hamas killing women and children and taking civilians hostage - clearly the actions of a terrorist group. Israel openly violating the Geneva conventions by indiscriminately targeting civilian infrastructure and in effect putting 2.3 million people into a state of...

That's just the 4.7bn overspend that you didn't count, if you divide it by 31million households. The full cost, per household, using your analysis, £3200. Three grand, from every household in the UK just for HS2. Hmm. Back to the original question then, is 100bn good value for money or could...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

We didn't stop spending on COVID because a lot people were dying or at risk of death or serious illness. HS2, is not Brexit, and cannot resolve a pandemic. Your basic argument now seems to be that we need HS2 no matter what the cost. I don't agree, surely we've done this to death now?

Let's compare apples with apples, eh. How much of that 1.18 trillion went on infrastructure investment? The actual spend so far, is £24.7bn. And in case you'd missed it, it's nowhere near finished and everyone accepts that even when it is, it's not coming in anywhere near the original...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

Jesus, where did I say that I'm against large-scale infrastructure spending. Put me in charge and we'll have an awful lot more renewable energy investment, and maybe the odd gigafactory. Boris can finally have his forty new hospitals, and we need a lot of schools building and fixing. We'll...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

I don't trust the Tories any more than you mate. I've always been of this opinion in regards to HS2. Of course Sunak is probably lying about using the money elsewhere, but I still think the whole thing is an enormous waste of money. Not big numbers, *vast* numbers. No other infrastructure...

And that's me done on HS2. I appreciate others differ but for me it was flawed and hugely over-expensive from the start, with original cost/benefit justifications based on completely made up figures. And then it got worse.

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

I don't know how many times I need to say that I've no objection to infrastructure spending, until it sinks home. Who is saying cancel all infrastructure projects? The cost of HS2 isn't "high", it's massive. 100 billion pounds. I don't think people get how big that number is. Over twenty...

    USSR invades Ukraine.

The idea that a clearly fascist state, Russia, is invading a neighbouring democracy to rid it of other fascists, is for the birds. That said, there's no doubt that Ukraine has issues with the far-right too, as do a number of Eastern European countries, like Serbia. We're not exactly perfect...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

Can I just put this out there. Start from scratch, and assume you've got 100 billion to invest in the country. Consider what's going on in terms of the disparity of wealth, the lack of housing, the state of schools, hospitals, and prisons, and the climate crisis, and tell me that you still...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

But the point is that it didn't make the case to *everyone*, unless you cherry pick only the people that agree with you. Plenty of other independent assessors questioned the value then and since. But like you once the idea that a gold-plated, fastest railway ever built, was the way forward...
