Transfer Rumour Markelo to Shabab Al-Ahli (1 Viewer)

What a really odd signing. Spend £4.5m on him in January despite also bringing in two other wingers, hardly played, now sold.

To be fair I think the weather is a bit better in the UAE.

Looks really bleak though, real cash grab from him at his young age, he can't be very confident in his ability or surely you refuse the move and fight for place or at least back yourself at a higher standard. Plenty of time to cash in later if it doesn't work out.

Or he does really well there and gets a move for even more cash rather than sitting in our reserves.

That makes no sense personally, we were flying, 95% chance of going up and saying he was in our plans for next season and there was no rush on him as he hadn’t played for months. We were pretty much confident of going up
 
The profit on him probably pays for the back office team this season!
 
He was signed when we were clearly favourites for promotion so the club must have thought he had the ability or potential

As I have said before, it's nothing to do with his ability.
I can only assume there was something about his commitment or attitude which the coaching team found unacceptable

Why? We bought him in the championship, for the championship.

Things have moved on, so he has.
 
You know when sometimes at work, a new person comes in and they can do the job, but everyone hates them because they’re a bit of a dick. I think that’s what’s happened here personally. Hopefully we’ll find out the true gossip one day!

Does that actually make sense?

We buy a player for a multimillion pound fee on I think a five year contract, in order for them to get us promotion when there's only around 4 months of the season left, and with a very good chance of going up anyway. Then don't really bother playing him during that period even though he's fit.

It makes far more sense we bought him with a longer term plan in mind which hasn't worked out and we've cut our losses sharpish.
 
Fair play if we have made a profit but I can’t get my head round why we would’ve?

I know they have money to burn out there but why would they pay more than we paid 6 months ago for a player that couldn’t get into the team? I have 0 information but surely we’ve taken a hit on this one?

We won't have made a loss as we were under zero pressure to sell. He was relatively cheap to buy, was on a long contract and we know there was plenty of other championship interest in him so we would easily have been able to loan him out. We will only have a sanctioned a sale if it benefitted us.

I think it's becoming obvious that we needed a right sided wide player to compete/provide cover for Tats so we enquired about a number of players both on loan and permanents. Markelo came available despite having picked up Esse on loan and we decided in the face of competition from Pompey and others that he was worth a punt as we didn't then know whether we would be promoted or not. I guess in his six months here he hasn't shown himself to be the right fit to make the step up with us so we've binned him off. Doesn't mean he's a bad player (although making a move to Saudi at his his age is a bit suss)

The guys is clearly a chancer. Bailing to a tinpot league to "make his bag" before he has done anything says everything. Its difficult to imagine a better position to be in as a young player in a newly promoted prem team under FL and his coaching staff and yet he binned that off. He wont get another chance like this in his career. My bet is he will end up playing in a pub team somewhere in Europe once this adventure fails.

We've no idea if he was pushing for a move or if he was told to find a new club. We've no idea what his personal circumstances are. It's a job at the end of the day.

This is highly accurate imo
What serious young player would bin off the chance to play under one of footballs most successful midfielders, in the premier league... To go kick around in the desert league in unfinished stadiums. Short term thinking at it's finest.

Tho to be fair, it's like "hmmm Dubai or Radford" ??🤷🤷🤷

I imagine they made first contact and offered double his wages and his eyes lit up like Blackpool illuminations

Well from his social media, we know it was ultimately "double the bag so he didn't think twice" and the other option could well have been rangers on a loan.
Maybe indeed he was told he wasn't in plans so he should consider options as they come in.
Odd purchase really.
But we made a little on the deal and he basically paid for Gus so ...

Realistically, he wouldn't have left had he been close to first choice. His alternatives weren't top division clubs and he was last linked to Portsmouth so if he's got the opportunity to earn more and we make a tidy profit, it's a win-win.
