I take it you do watch games, tell me honestly that MVE and saka don’t link up well together, esse gives us a bit more that’s the only reason he’s not starting, injury to esse and there’s no problem with saka starting ?The obsession is more with Sakamoto being untouchable for many people. If the eye test was that conclusive, why does the data not support that and on the contrary, why has MVE got more assists without Sakamoto?
MVE and Sakamoto have played together close to 100 games together (probably more), there’s been a lot of good moments between the two.
Statistically, MVE is a top end Championship RB both defensively and in attack. In fact, he’s actually a bigger threat than Sakamoto altogether. By contrast, Sakamoto is slightly above average in all categories, he doesn’t standout as ‘elite’ in any statistical category bar ‘fouls won’ and xA.
EMC, by contrast, has established himself as a top end winger and he’s playing with JDS who is not a top end WB, despite his complementary characteristics.
Statistically and ‘the eye test’, Sakamoto is less threatening compared to Esse, Rudoni and EMC.

Re BTA, you could say the same for Wright, Rudoni, Thomas and Thorpe.
FL said at the start of the season you have to work and work in training and be ready to take your chance. That is fair enough, until you do work hard and wait for your chance. But then Frank just brings his favourites back in regardless.
I’m a big Thomas fan and he would normally be first on the team sheet for me. But his red at Birmingham was brainless. Lati has come in and done very well. He was unlucky to be dropped after Southampton. Came back in and did well again. Thomas didn’t merit his start last night. He didn’t come up with a performance either.
It is clear Frank has his chosen few who just get a pass back into the side. Over time that can undo the squads togetherness

Sakamoto is 29 so Wrexham
or Celtic they need wingers.While MVE is forward getting the assists, sakamoto covers him, works back, not saying he’s brilliant but always puts a shift in, unlike some, did really well when he came on last night, prob won’t start in front of esse but there’s not many better than saka in this league

Makes perfect sense, Rudoni has a shoulder injury and is out. BTA facing a three/four match ban. Esse will play 10 so Saka and the new guy for the RW position
He was still working on it when he was rehabbing after calf injury although said it was ok now but unless you get surgery Im pretty sure dislocating shoulder again remains a risk. Maybe it’s just where he’s been asked to play but he’s not attacked the box in the same way as last season

I don’t think Lampard want his winger’s first priority is covering their WBs when they get forward… Besides, if what you say is true, why has MVE got more assists without Sakamoto than with this season?
Sakamoto is an above average winger in this division so he’d comfortably start for most teams. That said, is he better than Whittaker, Joseph, Azeez or Esse? These are the wingers the team around us have.
Is it a surprise, therefore, that we’ve signed two RW who seem a lot more attacking than Sakamoto?

Well it does give me a bit of confidence that we have money to spend, the club clearly think hes worth the investment.

One area we have potential in is Rudoni and Esse combining. Both can play wide or drift inside to the 10 role. If they can work together and rotate positions freely during a game that really does give the opposition marking problems. It increases their chances of finding space out wide and the the penalty area.
It’s relatively easy to mark a player who is playing in a fixed role and a fixed position. Once they start rotating and roaming it becomes far more difficult. You either have to pass them on to another defender which is difficult in real time or go man to man. Man to man means you can just walk someone into no mans land and create space for someone else.
