Rochdale have had 2 relegations in the last 55 years. So what does it show Grendel?

That shows that being a Rochdale fan is a truly miserable experience and you should be glad you don't support them as they have never been outside the bottom two divisions. That is in contrast to our club who over half a century have had far better times than not.

We have had nothing to celebrate other than escaping relegation several times for nearly 30 years. I take a lot of stick for being a Coventry City supporter. But there is one thing for sure. I am still proud to be a Coventry City supporter.

Same. It's my club and would never support another club. However, finishing closer to the bottom than top every year I do question why I'm spending my money for very little return.

also should add imo a promotion completley erases a relegation, if we get back up to championship then the relegation under thorn will not effect me in anyway from then onwards, no pain whatsoever

the general buzz around ccfc right now is proof that fans have missed out on a team capable of finishing top 6. im just glad i am finnaly getting to see it! and i am 33 so not a young un!

Personally I feel immense pride that a relatively small club like ccfc rose through the divisions and held our own in the top flight for so long. If others prefer to be negative about it then it is their choice. I loved out time in the top flight and wouldn't change it for anything.

I would much rather have our history than most of the other clubs in the FL. I don't see the appeal in trading it for years spent battling it out in the lower leagues and finishing 6th and crashing out of the play offs.

I still think there will be a lot of disappointment on this forum if we make the play offa this year and it slowly dawns on some that they don't equate promotion.

But for Rochdale, realistically, League 2 is there Championship and League 1 the Premier League. They have very little hope of the Championship and no realistic chance of the Premier League.

I couldn't give a shit about the underlying arguments regarding this....but never the less, it is quite simply a stunning fact......statistically freakish even.....bizarre.


The odds on "achieving" such a feat must be huge.


EDIT: Anyone on here remember a rather scathing & bitchy article written in the national press while we were still in the top flight......IIRC it was entitled "What is the point of Coventry city".......I think it was published after our last day escape at WHL in 1997


....at the time it made my blood boil, but close on 20 years later, I wish I could find it & read it again.

assuming all things being equal (and i know they are not)
but assuming that 1 in every 4 years a team finishes in the top6

44 years of not doing that (based on a 24 team division) odds are 314270/1

And statistically the longer it goes on, the more likely we will finish in the top 6 (obviously). I'm going for this season.
I remember Jimmy Greaves smirking on TV (obviously before 1987) about what is the difference between the pope and Coventry city, the pope's been to Wembley. That joke was often re-quoted, but 1987 killed it stone dead.

Whatever the view people take of our long stay in the top division you can't argue that we've had nothing to cheer about since. As STP's post shows every other team has had success one way or another since then. Its not really asking to much to have a decent season occasionally.

No top 6 finish but we have had our moments. Sometimes we focus too much on league position. Success is fleeting and soon forgotten. So long as we play decent, entertaining football, have one or two players who can show glimpses of greatness and occasionally beat clubs we are not expected to beat, we'll soldier on and hope and pray the good times are just around the corner.

...but....but....We keep being told revenues make little difference, a bit like the claims of many that a manager makes little difference when the people's choice was relegating us.
