I have to say that I have a (small) soft spot for Sheffield Utd fans, so in their current plight I have the occasional glance on their forums. Already turned on Nigel Clough (negative tactics), but there is almost total unanimity in their dislike of Michael Doyle. Knocking on a bit and limited ability, I know, but they say they don't ever see him make a tackle - which, as I recall, was the one thing he could occasionally do - sad really :(:(

He's made a good career out if very limited ability. He was the clubs highest wage earner at one point. I never rated him.

Me neither. Best thing Robert Page did while he was here was knock him out. He'll forever be a legend in my view for that :)

We supposedly signed a Rottweiler (thought tackler, not afraid to get stuck in). Bit like Deegan, he turned out to be a pussy cat!

Also part of one of the worst midfield partnerships that I've ever known (Hughes / Doyle). Yet managers persisted with it

He was never a good tackler. It's just something people said in consolation for the fact he was limited otherwise. That said, could never question his commitment whilst here, got time for the bloke in that respect.

There are a few selective memories over Michael Doyle I think. For a couple of years between 05 and 07 I thought he was very good for us. Indeed, there was a lot of speculation that Premier League sides were interested around that sort of time.

For a football fan to say that of a player in skyblue proves what a knuckle dragger you truly are. You sir are a disgrace. Maybe the current team are doing so well without a twat like you shouting abuse at them for misplacing a pass. I really do wonder what some people have as a home life so they can abuse players week in week out to vent their anger. Grow up.

the guy gave 100%. Yes he could miss a barn door from 5 yards, but never faulted him for commitment, wished everyone who pulls on a sky blue shirt had the same. Wouldn't be in this sorry mess now maybe.

If we had 11 Michael Doyle's we'd be in a far worse mess.

Technically very poor but the one thing I could never fault him for was his committment....there are a hell of a lot of players I've seen up here over the years I can't say that about!

I thought it is only Cov fans who get frustrated when they are losing and slag players off?

Well only the 10,000 that don't go to Sixfields anyway.

Thought he did okay when he played with Dennis Wise alongside him though.

IMO he was of course limited, but when used in a side playing direct football (Adams, Boothroyd) he was consistently our most effective player. That's why he won Player of The Year at the club, and he was vital to Boothroyd's early success here. He covered more ground than anyone on the pitch, was a leader, yes he did tackle hard (anyone who claims otherwise has selective memory issues and needs to get over it), closed down and pressed like no other player we had or have had since. Maybe Thomas is finally giving us that grafter in midfield, I don't know for myself as I haven't seen us this season, but that's what the reports suggest.

He did all of Wise's running, as Palmer did McAllister's. Without Doyle alongside him, we'd have probably had the Wise who had been warming the bench at Southampton.
