think our first home win for sometime was about a year before. 2-1 Regis and Houchen? Andy Gray for them. Not tikkabow son Andy Gray

Was in 1988, had to look it up to be honest though!!

On the old CET forum there used to be a sticky called the "Jimmy Hill Years". This was for the older chaps of 60 plus to chat about the 1960's players, games and memories. Very interesting for those who weren't there.

I've stickied this thread, it's been a great read so far thanks for creating this thread Macca. :)

First game I saw was late 70's home against Liverpool (Paul Dyson 1-0) but I was only about 6. I really remember going and being 'into it' more from about 83/84 just after we had sold all of our good young players (has this ever happened before?) after Dave Sexton left and Booby Gould brought in lots of unknown players who became the core of our cup winning side.

Exciting times with a 4-0 over Liverpool (Gibson and Platnauer) and lots of close scrapes.

Most memorable game is still the cup final I guess but loads of great ones and great players too, accross the 80s & 90's as my era really.

Blimey! I go back a bit! My first match was against Huddersfield in the old 2nd Division during the 1964-65 season. I was 10 years old. We lost 3-2. I remember sitting on the white wall that went along the old Spion Kop. When a goal was scored, hats were thrown on the air and rattles were shaken! What an atmosphere! I was also at the famous match against Wolves when we humped them 3-1. We were CHAMPIONS! Official figures quote the attendance as 51k + but I know for a fact that there were far more there! People were climbing the floodlights, the gates, just about anything to see this game! Me? I was in my usual spot on the wall! Mind you, I finished up sitting on the edge of the pitch with loads of other kids! (very lax in those days!)

I was sat on the edge of the pitch in front of the Sky Blue Stand - all us young 'uns were passed over for safety from the crush on the terraces - I remember the ref walking round checking it was safe to play the match before the kick off - it felt like there was electicity in the air that afternoon. When my favourite player the great Ian Gibson scored we went bananas!

Great rivalry with Wolves at that time - they were considered the big club and we were the upstarts.

What a great nostalgic thread - so good that, after months of sitting passively on the sidelines reading but not contributing, I'm finally making my first post!
Wolves in 67 was also the first match I clearly remember - an immense crowd, stunning atmosphere, sitting right on the touchline, and somehow being found by my Dad after the game. Maybe originating from that match, and the 2 clubs being promoted together, I always see Wolves as our top local rivals - Derek Dougan was the Devil Incarnate back then (and then along came John Richards)!
Anyway, good to say Hello to you guys and PUSB now and forever.

one great game i went to was West Ham i think it was about 2000, city on took less than a 1000 fans and we got stuffed 5-0 but all of us never stopped singing for the entire game. I think this really pissed of the hamemrs fans as they were hoping to see our glum faces but i think it was the opposite way!! ah the life of a city supporter hey!

Favourite away trip for me was abiout 10 years ago Forest. I was so p*ssed thta I had to check the score on teletext when I got back. The last thing I remember was stood on my seat celebrating a goal and hurling abuse at the Forest fans. Hooters on the way back and some dodgy pubs in town. At 38 of course I'm far too old and sensible for all that nonsense now :p

There were some fantastic games over the years, wins over the "top" clubs like Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea... great players aswell.... Tommy Hutch, Bobby MacDonald, Ferguson, Wallace .... so many memories. As for the post asking if it was really great under Jimmy Hill..... YES! JH was the master at City. Always will be as far as I'm concerned. Can't wait to see his statue installed in it's rightful place at the ground - (just wish it was still Highfield Road though).

My first memory of being taken to Highfield Road was in about 1963, it was an evening game and I remember the crowd chanting "WE WANT 10" and my memory says we won 8 - 1, but my memory isn't the best - (See "Not the sharpest tool" in "Ernie Hunt's Sideburns")

I also sat on the side of the pitch for the Wolves game, and ran on the pitch when Ernie Machin scored, then the referee said he'd abandon the match if anyone ran on the pitch again, I'm convinced there was a moment's silence when the third went in whilst everyone held their breath praying nobody would run on the pitch.

Disorganised that game you remember was Shrewsbury. Oct 22, 1963. Ronnie Rees hat trick. Over 27,000 there. I remember it well. I was about 12 myself. Jeez. Wolves, what can you say? Sky Blue history. Great to be there. Be nice to get some great days back.

Remember "Give it the old 5!!" shout? City scored 5 goals many times that it was expected of them every game! :p

I do remember that....my god it has been a while since we thumped people a few times per season!! Even Barnsley got away with it this year haha.

The first game i went to actually on my own without me pa, was Boro....we won 2 - 1. They went mad after our second and stormed out smashing up Gulson Rd.
I also got my scarf nicked ;)

The first match I ever went to was 1985 League Cup match against Chester City at Highfield Road... Won 7-2, with Regis scoring 5 goals. I wasn't very old, but if I remember correctly it was 3-0? at half time and the scoreboard said 'Cyris Regis 3-0 Chester'.......

Hi all, Just changed my avatar, thanks to Cov La La La's help. My Dad bought me that old rattle in 1961 and I engraved Ronnie Rees' name into it in 1964 with a 3" nail. It's travelled with me to NA and would never part with it. Wish we had Ronnie in the team today....fantastic player, as were many of that era! My first game was against Brighton in the old 3rd Div South in 1953. I remember Ray Sambrook played like a rock the whole game. Never lost a ball once and shoulder charges were the thing of the day back then. He could knock people off the ball like they were balls of cotton wool. My Dad asked where I wanted to stand so I looked around and saw the behemoth that was the Kop. It seemed up in the clouds to a 5 year old. What memories, what memories!

No problem egastap.

Thanks for you're posts old folks. :claping hands:

Some of us 'older' folks will be able to go on forever about our childhood and SkyBlue memories, after all, we have more history now than future. I have supported the Bantams and more recently, the SkyBlues for about 58 years now. So many memories......alas, if only I could remember them!

Thanks Snoz ~ that's been bugging me for years ~ did they play in a light green strip, which my memory claims they did ?

I remember the smoke coming out from under the West End shed and billowing up into the sky, and blokes passing hip flasks around, and the chanting.

Someone else mentioned "The Old 5" ~ Remember that one "Bring on the old 5." Ronnie Rees - the original Welsh Wizard, tearing down the left wing.

My favourite era came a bit later though "Hutch on the wing and Stein in the middle." Some of my family were Rangers fans and they couldn't believe he was coming to play for us, he was a God at Ibrox. Turned out his wife went to school with the captain of our dart's team, so he started drinking in The Shepherd and Shepherdess, down Kerseley.

I have a question for my fellow 'old farts'. What year did the rule change pertaining to goalkeepers having to bounce the ball every 4 steps whilst in the box? I know as a kid that's how it was. It made goalies look kinda stupid doing it, but them's the rules. I guess some of our younger readers might be astounded at this 'rule that used to be'. By the way, this is not a rhetorical question...it's so long ago I've forgotten. Anyone know?

Bit of a stupid rule but I remember it. I think it was the rule whereby goalies HAD to release the ball after a minimum of 4 steps, so in order to get around it, they would bounce the ball while making their way towards the edge of the box to take a kick (if it wasn't a placed "goal kick"). I think this was the late 70's - early 80's.

Holy Sh*t, was it as late as that Houchen? I thought it was in the early 60's sometime. The last recollection I have of this dumb rule was Arthur Lightning, but I could be way off base....it's all getting a little hazy....must be oldtimers disease!

I was playing schoolboy level (in goal) in the early 1960's and don't remember having to use that rule. I DO remember it later on though.
