Strachan had a good group, granted often selling better players, but still a good group. He was very stubborn, which was his downfall. It is not my era so cannot comment, but has time and hindsight been kind to Strachan's stint as manager?
From someone looking back who did not live through it, it seems to me that Mr Richardson was the one holding the club back and Strachan did decent enough to keep our heads above water for as long as he did
Not trying to rewrite history I am just curious

Remember that game where Hedman got injured and he refused to take him off in spite of the fact he could barely walk. Stubborn is exactly the word - and quite condescending towards the fans too from what I can recall.Strachan had a good group, granted often selling better players, but still a good group. Personally should have got more out of that group, especially after the 97/98 season.

I thought Strachan did a great job here. I do remember him saying in an interview ,after finishing here, that unless a football club has the money to refresh the squad then 3 years is all that you should do at the same club.It is not my era so cannot comment, but has time and hindsight been kind to Strachan's stint as manager?

Middlesbrough in April 1999. Remember it well being my first match and wondering why he made no attempt to save a long range shot!Remember that game where Hedman got injured and he refused to take him off in spite of the fact he could barely walk. Couldnt navigate enough wins away from home in a season where we only lost 2 at home ..we should have made europe reallyIt is not my era so cannot comment, but has time and hindsight been kind to Strachan's stint as manager?

It was ridiculous as Kirkland was on the benchMiddlesbrough in April 1999. Remember it well being my first match and wondering why he made no attempt to save a long range shot!
Very split for me. He wasn't helped by the players that left in the summer but obviously wasn't great in our relegation season and completely lost it the following season. He was the manager for my favourite season of all time though, ironically the one before the relegation season. I'm aware this is probably in part due to the fact it was the season i started going a lot more, but even parking that some of the football was fantastic and some of the games are burned into my memory. Yes we were dire away, but i didn't travel away and for some reason it almost felt kind of separate to the home stuff at the time. If you didn't go you'd just catch the results on the news or watch 2 mins on MOTD, then you quickly got over those shitty 2 minute highlights the following week when we cooked someone at home again. Also his interviews were always hilarious. It is not my era so cannot comment, but has time and hindsight been kind to Strachan's stint as manager?

Feel like it was more 4 or 5 than 2 tbh but most the others were wins. If we were even half decent away then we could have really done something.Couldnt navigate enough wins away from home in a season where we only lost 2 at home ..we should have made europe really
We lost against villa and leicester only in 97/98Feel like it was more 4 or 5 than 2 tbh but most the others were wins. If we were even half decent away then we could have really done something.
Ah apologies, thought you were on about 'the entertainers' of 99/00.We lost against villa and leicester only in 97/98

Agree with this. I believe from a number of ex players he was a decent coach. But he was totally inexperienced as a manager and we ultimately paid for that. He had a complete blind spot in improving the defence and as others say selection at times seemed to be based on some kind of favouritism. To get us relegated with the money we spent was a disaster. Should never have been appointed as a manager in the premier league given his inexperience at the time (not his fault) - didn't help himself after being appointed. And don't get me started on the Big Ron, Chris Coleman and Peter Reid eras - high profile names - very poor managers.Far outstayed his welcome.
Left us 19th in the Championship & £60million in debt.
We had some good times - and it certainly wasn’t all his fault. But you can’t sugarcoat the end. He was incredibly stubborn and never really acknowledged his own shortcomings.
