I think the talk of it being a closed shop isn’t about it impossible to get tickets for any away games, it’s about it being impossible for new fans to ever catch up with the people at the top of the pyramid. If you’re a new ST holder who diligently attends all the cup games and unglamorous midweek aways etc to build up points how long will it take you to reach a point where you’re in the running for a Birmingham or Leicester away ticket?

Don’t the rest of us have the benefit of points already accrued in the past three years? Which makes us more likely to get away tickets which makes it harder for tickets to make general sale etc etc

Like it or not (and I don’t expect any longstanding fans to like it), the competition for tickets is going to increase to the point where the club won’t be able to successfully engage and monetise the next generation of fans if the best deal we can offer them involves travelling the country for years and/or waiting for the older fans to die. If we’re not already there we soon will be.

It's longer than that in practice. Our most recent seasons of having season tickets, started 3.5 years ago. We've been doing as many shit away games as we can and we are on about 1000 points, my son on 950 ish.

We're currently on around 1300, and that's having only been to two away games this season. We'd probably only be on 1400 under 'usual' circumstances though.

As I said in an earlier post there is a scenario, probably if we get to the PL, where they will have to put tickets out to ballot, but we're miles away from that in the championship.

Probably just about 200 available with cup games. Might be a bit more this season with the amount of midweek away games.

I had similar opinions to you. I wanted to go to as many games as I could.

My points have been built up over the past 3 years. Midweek mainly.

I’m thinking that I absolutely deserve to be ahead of those who don’t travel.

In years gone by I didn’t bother due to work, family and money being tight.


This season league games points needed to get a ticket this season

General sale. Norwich, Preston, Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall (All weekday games)

500 pts Middlesborough. Mid-week.

1000 Plus. Southampton.
1100 Plus. Charlton

1400 pts or more. Leicester, Birmingham, Ipswich, Stoke, Wrexham, Oxford, Derby.

Cup games?

Derby went quite low, to about 900 points. I remember that one from the bloke's spreadsheet (that gets uploaded on here sometimes). Sheff Weds was a Saturday.

Combine that with doing all home cup and play offs along with Wembley and I'm currently in the 1600 bracket. This season I think that will lead to me not being able to get tickets to 3-4 away matches, Wrexham and Oxford so far, likely QPR and I can imagine Watford being potentially tricky.

Before this season doing an average of 7-8 away matches would have been possible on a much lower point tally. This season I think we have been selling out most allocations quicker than previously, but that's to be expected with how we have been playing.

So you 've done 29 out of 82 and there are only 3-4 games you won't be able to get tickets for. Certainly one in the eye for those saying it's a closed shop. Fair play for sharing. It shows we have it about right and the reactions because a couple of entitled can't get to a particular game are best ignored. Hopefully yours are less in 22/23 and more of the recent ones as the 22/23 will drop off at the end of this season.

There are people who go to every game. We do most, but not all and are in the first allocation, but many with loads more points. The only way you get to the top of the tree is not to miss a game, home or away plus cups, for 4 consecutive seasons.

I am on smack bang 1700 points

22/23 and 23/24 - I was living up North as a student and there were a fair few away games I couldn't make (Your Tuesday night ones mainly) which is what is holding me back from being in the top echelons I imagine, there have also been a handful I have not bothered with since returning home

When 23/24 is wiped I in theory should level out and be up there

This is not a complaint, more a shoulder shrug of acceptance. I had a season ticket for years but moved away from the area. I still attended many home and away games but then kids scuppered that. I started going more frequently again in about 2013 (the fallow years) including unforgettable trips to Barnet, Crawley, Stevenage etc. Unfortunately just as things improved circumstances changed and I could only manage about four games per season. Now if I want to attend it is increasingly difficult as I can only make certain dates and they never seem to coincide with ready availablilty. I get why some are annoyed at not being able to get tickets but I have accepted it as a consequence of both success and non-attendance. Regular attendees SHOULD get priority and I just begrudgingly accept that away games are pretty much a thing of the past and a firestick is my friend.

It seems to me you are a good example of the kind of fan who the club could be keeping more engaged by offering you some kind of chance to attend certain games, however small. Presumably you would be happy to pay something for the privilege, but under the current situation the only people benefiting are the fire stick guys.

Home games yes. The club get no benefit if he gets an away ticket other than pissing off someone who does attend regularly.

If it was your business, would you want the casual person who spends occasionally or the ones that blindly follow and buy your goods whatever the quality of them? Of course you want both, but if you have to make a choice, then you'll select the low maintenance cash cow and keep rinsing them for that you are able to.

That's buisness folks! I usually end up paying for hospitality these days as all the good seats are gone by the time I can get a ticket and at my age hospitality is a more pleasant prospect! Funnily enough I attended Norwich away last season.........and wished I hadn't.

For those who have not been able to justify having a season ticket for differing undestandable reasons over the previous qualifying seasons are in all practicality 'shut out' of almost all games. The only ones that can be attended are those that are midweek away and the couple of those games away with big allocations such Sheff Wednesday and Stoke in cup and Im sure Blackburn.

I have over 900 points and only got to Preston, Sheffied Wednesday and Stoke in FA cup. This is someone who has been to countless home and away games over a very long time period. Some games were possible to get tickets for but not practical with being midweek and more than 200 plus miles away from me .

Cant be 100% but this is my analysis so far for someone with 900 points and likely situation should we continue being in contention for direct promotion.

The problem with your fairest way is that it isnt actualy fair. I am fortunate and qualify for the majority of games however i object to potentially missing out on a low allocation game to somebody who has minimum points but wins a ballot. Already we have supporters clubs guaranteed tickets at lower brackets and im sure the club also take an amount for players to distribute too. Imagine Bournemouth away in the premier under your proposal... people in the highest bracket probably miss out.
