Again yesterday, he showed his leadership in bucket loads . A goal behind & urging his players on ……2 goals down & the same .
No histrionics , but calm encouragement throughout, while he plays his normal 100% game .
A fantastic captain of our club .

Its Amazing isnt it that he gives the ball away probably 3 times in the game and we are all saying its his poorest game for us.
It just shows how good he really is.

He gave the ball away twice in the first 5 minutes and it's like witnessing a once in a lifetime event!

Not his best game yesterday but he was still one of the best players on the pitch

Yeah he I did and I was panicking for him as was thinking bet he’s never started a game like this before he must be flustered. I was then watching him carefully as to what he was going to do next pass as I was like yeah but he’s Matty Grimes he’ll know how to play himself in, sure enough next touch took more care over a 5 yard pass than I’ve ever seen.

FL Identified that Sheaf was not good enough and midfield needed a a better controlling influence, a better continuity player. Then they went and paid for him never mind his age. Probably one of the best managerial decisions in the recent history of the club. I love watching him.
No, I would say he probably did believe that Sheaf was good enough, but that he was just so unavailable to play all the time.

We were all frustrated by that.

He is for sure.

Sheaf has so many more errors in him and his pass completion compared to Grimes, must surely pale in comparison, you would think
The issue with sheaf was never some errors, that's life it was errors in dangerous positions. I thought Grimes was nowhere near his best yesterday but any ball given away wasn't in a dangerous position and we had cover.

Id been telling a couple of baggies mates that he was under the radar our most important player…. five mins in, thanks Matty !

Showed up the rest of the game though. Couple of really important chases back/blocks

Most telling moment for me - beyond his obvious game impact - was when JDS went to take a quick throw, about 3 minutes from time, and Grimes signalled him to slow down and think…

The leader that we’ve been missing since Fadz left; constantly talking and coaching others through the game.

Some of his defensive work was superb. He gets forward a lot too and puts good balls into the penalty area. A quality player who never seems to panic.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Grimes were we to go up.

You’ve seen the impact Xhaka has anchoring sunderland. i think we would follow that and potentially see Grimes go on loan to one of the relegated teams

Whether he could make the step up and be so effective, who knows (intelligent footballers can survive at the highest level). He would certainly be decent within the squad. It would depend what you place around him. Good reading of the game can be worth two or three yards of pace. I don't know if you are old enough to have watched Trevor Peak or Paul McGrath at the top level.

McGrath just defied all logic.....even when you thought he was beaten...out popped a foot and the ball was safe. Never trained much either :D

This is a lovely story but didn’t we have it confirmed Grimes was on our radar before Lampard was here? Player aquisition for better or worse is mostly out of the managers hands these days.

Almost all other championship players will be "on our radar" i'd say, in that we've had a look at them. But a manager would come in and have a lot of influence over who to actually get over the line.

It's okay it wasn't a robins dig
